Is Distance to Provider a Barrier to Care for Medicaid Patients With Breast, Colorectal, or Lung Cancer
Purpose: Distance to provider might be an important barrier to timely diagnosis and treatment for cancer patients who qualify for Medicaid coverage. Whether driving time or driving distance is a better indicator of travel burden is also of interest. Methods: Driving distances and times from patient residence to primary care provider were calculated for 3,917 breast, colorectal (CRC) and lung cancer Medicaid patients in Washington State from 1997 …
Measures of Adherence to Oral Hypoglycemic Agents at the Primary Care Clinic Level
BACKGROUND: Prior research found that in the Veterans Affairs health care system (VA), the proportion of patients adherent to oral hypoglycemic agents varies from 50% to 80% across primary care clinics. This study examined whether variation in patient and facility characteristics determined those differences. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of 444,418 VA primary care patients with diabetes treated in 559 clinics in fiscal year (FY) 2006-2007.…
Cancer Care of American Indians and Alaska Natives and Other Racial Groups Enrolled in Public and Private Insurance Plans
Objectives. To compare cancer care among American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) patients with other racial groups. Methods. We used Washington State cancer registry records to identify 33,624 patients < age 65 diagnosed with local and regional stage breast, colorectal, and lung cancer from 1997 to 2003. Records were linked with regional tribal registry and Medicaid records to identify AIAN. Results. Enrollment in Medicaid at or after diagnosis …
Disenrollment From Medicaid After Recent Cancer Diagnosis
OBJECTIVES: We examine the frequency with which newly diagnosed cancer patients are covered by Medicaid in Washington State and the duration of coverage. METHODS: Medicaid enrollment and claims files were linked to the Washington State Cancer Registry to identify all Medicaid enrollees with breast, cervical, lung, colorectal, and prostate cancer between 1997 and 2002. RESULTS: We identified 5009 newly diagnosed cancer patients covered by Medicaid…
A Forensic Evaluation of the National Emphysema Treatment Trial Using the Expected Value of Information Approach
BACKGROUND/RATIONALE: Expected value of information (EVI) analyses allow researchers to estimate the returns to conducting research. We used EVI techniques to estimate the value of the National Emphysema Treatment Trial (NETT), a multicenter randomized trial of lung-volume-reduction surgery (LVRS) versus medical therapy (MT) for patients with severe emphysema, then compared that result to the trial cost. METHODS: We gathered information on costs …
