  • Postpartum severe maternal morbidity

    Open Access•Michael R Kramer, Kaitlyn K Stanhope et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2026

Severe maternal morbidity (SMM) is a composite measure comprising a spectrum of pregnancy-related complications that have substantial implications for short- and long-term maternal health. Existing research focuses primarily on the occurrence of SMM at delivery, but growing evidence points to risks throughout the post-partum period. While racial, ethnic, economic, and geographic disparities in SMM are well documented, the underlying drivers of in…

  • Severe Maternal Morbidity in Georgia, 2009–2020

    Open Access•Michael R Kramer, Katie Labgold et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2023•Referencias: 28

BACKGROUND: The increasing focus of population surveillance and research on maternal-and not only fetal and infant-health outcomes is long overdue. The United States maternal mortality rate is higher than any other high-income country, and Georgia is among the highest rates in the country. Severe maternal morbidity (SMM) is conceived of as a "near miss" for maternal mortality, is 50 times more common than maternal death, and efforts to systematic…

DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis of the 2000-2013 March suppl…

Open Access•E Kathleen Adams, Katya Galactionova et al.•ARTICLE•INQUIRY The Journal of Health…•2015

Effects of Medicaid family planning waivers on unintended births and contraceptive use postpartum were examined in Illinois, New York, and Oregon using the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System. Estimates for women who would be Medicaid eligible "if" pregnant in the waiver states and states without expansions were derived using a difference-in-differences approach. Waivers in New York and Illinois were associated with almost a 5.0 percentag…

Open Access•Gery P Guy, E Kathleen Adams et al.•ARTICLE•INQUIRY The Journal of Health…•2012

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) will substantially increase public health insurance eligibility and alter the costs of insurance coverage. Using Current Population Survey (CPS) data from the period 2000–2008, we examine the effects of public and private health insurance premiums on the insurance status of low-income childless adults, a population substantially affected by the ACA. Results show higher public premiums to be ass…

Kristine Principe, Kristine E Principe et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2012•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 10

In response to a growing concern that nonprofit hospitals are not providing sufficient benefit to their communities in return for their tax-exempt status, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) now requires nonprofit hospitals to formally document the extent of their community contributions. While the IRS is increasing financial scrutiny of nonprofit hospitals, many provisions in the recently passed historical health reform legislation will also have…

This study linked data from the Georgia Comprehensive Cancer Registry to Medicaid enrollment and claims to test whether the Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention and Treatment Act (BCCPTA), which provided a new and quicker pathway to Medicaid eligibility for low-income breast cancer patients, led to more patients enrolling at an early stage of disease. Results based on difference-in-differences analysis indicated that Georgia's BCCPTA increased b…

This study highlights the importance of understanding the meaning of smoking in different social contexts so future tobacco control interventions can be developed to reduce health and social inequalities

OBJECTIVE: This study examines the impact of Medicaid program changes in the late 1990s on the timing of Medicaid enrollment and PNC initiation among pregnant teens by race and ethnicity. RESEARCH DESIGN: Using Medicaid enrollment and claims data and a difference-in-differences method,…

    E Kathleen Adams, Norma I Gavin et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2008•Referencias: 19

BACKGROUND: The 1997 State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) program allowed states to expand Medicaid to uninsured children through age 18 in families under 200% of the federal poverty level. Prepregnancy insurance coverage of adolescents may help reduce unintended pregnancies, address other medical issues, and allow for early and adequate prenatal care for those carrying to term. OBJECTIVES: We tested the effects of SCHIP implementati…

Previous studies suggest access to and satisfaction with care may be different for enrollees in S-CHIP and Medicaid, but it is unclear whether those differences are fully explained by socioeconomic characteristics of the enrollees. We analyze access and satisfaction of three groups of children: Medicaid enrolled, S-CHIP enrolled, and children who are income eligible for Medicaid but carry a card similar to the state's S-CHIP children's card. • Spend-Down of Assets Before Medicaid Eligibility Among Elderly Nursing-Home Recipients in Michigan

Brian O Burwell, Brian Burwell et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1990

Many elderly persons enter nursing homes as private pay clients, spend their available life savings, and then apply for medical assistance under Medicaid after their assets are depleted. However, reliable data on the size and characteristics of this "spend-down" population have been lacking. This study used Medicaid claims and enrollment data to identify the proportion of elderly Medicaid nursing-home users who originally entered nursing homes as…

Information on ZIP code of residence, closest hospital, and hospital of admission were used to analyze hospital choices of the…

  • Asset Spend-Down in Nursing Homes

    E Kathleen Adams, Mark R Meiners et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1993

The issue of how many elderly are affected by catastrophic nursing home expenses is a major part of the debate over if and/or how to reform long-term-care financing. Currently, there is some discussion regarding the magnitude of this catastrophic event, referred to as "asset spend-down", among the elderly. National data suggest the magnitude is small, while state-specific studies indicate it is greater. In addition, the literature regarding asset…

This study uses Medicaid claims data for income‐eligible enrollees in California, Georgia and Mississippi to compare expenditures, resource usage and health risks between residents of rural and urban areas of the states. Resource use is measured using the Resource Based Relative Value Scale (RBRVS) system for professional services, hospital days and outpatient facility visits; it also is valued at private insurance reimbursement rates for the sta…

  • The Impact of Medicaid Primary Care Case Management on Office-Based Physician Supply in Alabama and Georgia

Open Access•E Kathleen Adams, Janet M Bronstein et al.•ARTICLE•INQUIRY The Journal of Health…•2003

The success of the "primary care case management (PCCM)" form of managed care implemented in many state Medicaid programs over the past several years depends in part on the expanded availability of primary care physician sites to substitute for hospital-based outpatient care and to provide a medical home for enrollees. However, the PCCM requirement for physicians to accept assignment of a caseload of patients and to provide all of their primary c…
