  • The Quality of Pharmacologic Care for Adults in the United States

    William H Shrank, Steven M Asch et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2006•Referencias: 39

BACKGROUND: Despite rising annual expenditures for prescription drugs, little systematic information is available concerning the quality of pharmacologic care for adults in the United States. We evaluated how frequently appropriate pharmacologic care is ordered in a national sample of U.S. residents. METHODS: The RAND/UCLA Modified Delphi process was used to select quality-of-care indicators for adults across 30 chronic and acute conditions and p…

  • Does the Collaborative Model Improve Care for Chronic Heart Failure

    Steven M Asch, David W Baker et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2005•Referencias: 27

BACKGROUND: Organizationally based, disease-targeted collaborative quality improvement efforts are widely applied but have not been subject to rigorous evaluation. We evaluated the effects of the Institute of Healthcare Improvement's Breakthrough Series (IHI BTS) on quality of care for chronic heart failure (CHF). RESEARCH DESIGN: We conducted a quasi-experiment in 4 organizations participating in the IHI BTS for CHF in 1999-2000 and 4 comparable…

  • The Quality of Health Care Delivered to Adults in the United States

ELIZABETH A MCGLYNN, Steven M Asch et al.•ARTICLE•New England Journal of Medicine•2003

BACKGROUND: We have little systematic information about the extent to which standard processes involved in health care--a key element of quality--are delivered in the United States. METHODS: We telephoned a random sample of adults living in 12 metropolitan areas in the United States and asked them about selected health care experiences. We also received written consent to copy their medical records for the most recent two-year period and used thi…

  • Quality of Health Care for Women

    ELIZABETH A MCGLYNN, B Jonathan et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2003•Referencias: 37

The QA Tools system offers an alternative approach to evaluating health system performance. Potential advantages include the richness of the information produced by the system, the ability to create summary scores for consumers and purchasers, and the system-level performance information for use in quality improvement activities

  • The Care of HIV-Infected Adults in the United States

Samuel A Bozzette, Sandra H Berry et al.•ARTICLE•New England Journal of Medicine•1998

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: In order to elucidate the medical care of patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in the United States, we randomly sampled HIV-infected adults receiving medical care in the contiguous United States at a facility other than military, prison, or emergency department facility during the first two months of 1996. We interviewed 76 percent of 4042 patients selected from among the patients receiving care from…

  • Medicaid Health Maintenance Organizations

    Joan L Buchanan, Arleen Leibowitz et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1996•Referencias: 22

A randomized trial to evaluate the Florida site of the Program for Prepaid Managed Care showed that the plan, a staff model health maintenance organization, was successful in attracting Medicaid enrollees. The evaluation established that the health maintenance organization was able to limit members' utilization. The savings were in the form of lower likelihood of using care. The amount of services received, once care was initiated, was the same i…

  • The Urge to Merge

Robert M Bell, Joan Keesey et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1994

This paper describes a procedure used to link Medicaid claims data to California vital statistics records for very low birthweight infants. The linkage involved about 53,000 infants born from 1980 to 1987 and 1.46 million claims for delivery/birth-related hospital admissions during the same period. Because the two data files did not share a unique identifier, record linkage required combining evidence across several linking variables: delivery ho…

  • Mortality differences between New York City municipal and voluntary hospitals, for selected conditions

    Martin F Shapiro, R E Park et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1993•Citada por: 1

To determine if mortality differences between municipal and voluntary hospitals in New York City persist after adjustment for computerized administrative data (age, sex, principal diagnosis, and secondary diagnosis), six conditions in those hospitals from 1984 through 1987 were studied. Unadjusted mortality was significantly higher in municipal hospitals for myocardial infarction, stroke, and head trauma, and lower for congestive heart failure an…
