  • Assessing educational disparities in Covid-19 related excess mortality in Spain

Open Access•Jose Pulido, Miguel Ángel Díaz López et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Introduction: Data on the increase in mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic based on individuals' socioeconomic positions are limited. This study examines this increase in mortality in Spain during the epidemic waves of 2020 and 2021. Methods: We calculated the overall and cause-specific mortality rates during the 2017-2019 pre-pandemic period and four epidemic periods in 2020 and 2021 (first, second, third-fourth, and fifth-sixth waves). Mortal…

  • Abrupt peaks in perceived risk of occasional drug use after changing the question order in a repeated self-administered survey

Open Access•César Pérez-Romero, Gregorio Barrio et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Background: Question-order changes in repeated surveys can distort comparisons. We want to describe the evolution of drug risk perceptions among Spanish adolescents and assessing whether the 2006 peaks in perceived risk of occasional drug use can be explained by question-order changes. Methods: The subjects were secondary students from a biennial national survey during 2000-2012. A one-off intervention was applied in 2006, replacing the two-adjac…

  • Awareness and Use of HIV Self-Testing Among Men Who Have Sex With Men Remains Low in Spain 2 Years After Its Authorization

Open Access•Juan Miguel Guerras, Juan-Miguel Guerras et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Objectives: HIV self-testing has been available in Spain since 2017 as a diagnostic tool to promote earlier diagnosis. We aimed to assess awareness and previous use of HIV self-testing in a sample of men who have sex with men (MSM) recruited online more than 2 years after its legal authorization in Spain. Methods: We analyzed 5,492 MSM recruited between May and July 2020 in gay dating apps/websites and other social networks. We estimated the prop…

  • Educational Gradients in Drinking Amount and Heavy Episodic Drinking among Working-Age Men and Women in Spain

Open Access•Miguel Ángel Díaz López, Gregorio Barrio et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Alcohol-related harm decreases as socioeconomic position increases, although sometimes the opposite happens with alcohol intake. The objective was to know the educational gradient in monthly measures of drinking amount and heavy episodic drinking (HED) among people aged 25−64 years in Spain from 1997−2017. Such gradient was characterized with the relative percent change (PC) in drinking measures per year of education from generalized linear regre…

  • Preference towards HIV Self-Testing above Other Testing Options in a Sample of Men Who Have Sex with Men from Five European Countries

Open Access•Juan Hoyos, Tomás Maté et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

We analyzed men who have sex with men (MSM) from Denmark, Germany, Greece, Portugal and Spain to identify who would choose HIV self-testing as their preferred testing method and assessed their preferred setting to acquire a self-testing kit and to confirm a reactive result. In 2016, we recruited an online sample of 3725 HIV-negative MSM. We used Poisson regression to identify factors associated with choosing self-testing as the preferred testing …

  • Prevalence of and Factors Associated with Driving a Vehicle with Timed-Out Inspection Certificate in Spain

    Open Access•Luis Miguel Martín-delosReyes, Virginia Martínez‐Ruiz et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of vehicles on the road with a timed-out vehicle inspection certificate (TOVIC) and the associations of driver, vehicle, and environmental factors with this infraction. A quasi-induced exposure approach was used in this cross-sectional study to analyze a case series comprising 51,305 drivers passively involved in clean collisions (only one infractor driver involved) between two or more vehicles register…

  • Trends and equity in the use of health services in Spain and Germany around austerity in Europe

Open Access•Almudena Moreno-Mínguez, Almudena Moreno et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2021

In both Spain and Germany, service use decreased between 2009 and 2017. In the first few years, this reduction coincided with a period of austerity in Spain. In general, we did not find socioeconomic differences in health service use

  • Long-term impact of the 2008 economic crisis in Spain on road traffic collisions mortality by socioeconomic position

    Open Access•Jose Pulido, Juan Hoyos et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Place•2021•Referencias: 1

  • The incorporation of HIV self-testing as an exclusive option among men who have sex with men in Spain

Open Access•Juan Hoyos, Juan Miguel Guerras et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

HIV self-testing could become the exclusive testing option for more than a third of our participants. It was chosen as the exclusive option especially by older, at risk and under-tested MSM. Self-testing strategies need to especially consider the linkage to care process. In this sense, only a small fraction would not know how to react and virtually nobody reported taking no action if obtaining a reactive result

  • High risk men who have sex with men in Spain are reporting low intentions of actively seeking HIV testing

Open Access•Juan Hoyos, Kostas Koutentakis et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

We identified a group of high risk and undertested MSM that could be behind a substantial proportion of the UAIs with potential of transmission/acquisition of HIV. Given their low willingness to seek an HIV test and low risk perception, they constitute a population that will probably require approaches other than client initiated strategies

  • High hepatitis C virus prevalence and incidence in a community cohort of young heroin injectors in a context of extensive harm reduction programmes

Fernanda Vallejo, Fernando Vallejo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2015•Referencias: 16

BACKGROUND: Cohort studies on hepatitis C virus (HCV) among drug injectors are scarcer than studies on HIV. Combined harm reduction interventions (HRIs) can prevent HCV infection. Spain has a medium-high coverage of HRIs. METHODS: 513 young heroin users who injected drugs in the past 12 months (recent injectors) were street-recruited in 2001-2003 and followed until 2006 in three Spanish cities; 137 were anti-HCV seronegative, 77 of whom had ≥1 fo…

  • Preferred HIV testing services and programme characteristics among clients of a rapid HIV testing programme

Open Access•Juan Hoyos, María José Belza et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

HIV testing services that don't require an appointment, based on free tests with rapid results are most valued by a young, not socially marginalized but high risk sexual exposure population. On the contrary, issues traditionally highly valued by health care providers or AIDS social organizations (privacy and anonymity) are much less valued

  • HCV seroconversion among never-injecting heroin users at baseline

Open Access•Maria J Bravo, Fernanda Vallejo et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2012

  • Infrequent opioid overdose risk reduction behaviours among young adult heroin users in cities with wide coverage of HIV prevention programmes

Open Access•Montserrat Neira-León, Gregorio Barrio et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2011

  • Impact of the demerit point system on road traffic accident mortality in Spain

Jose Pulido, Pablo Lardelli et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2010•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 4

BACKGROUND: To assess the effect of the Demerit Point System (DPS), introduced in Spain on 1 July 2006, on the number of fatalities due to road traffic accidents, using a methodology that controls for the seasonal variation and trend in the data series. METHODS: Time-series analysis by ARIMA models of 29 113 fatalities in road traffic accidents (at the accident scene or within 24 h thereafter), between January 2000 and December 2007. The model pe…

    Arthur J Hartz, Evelyn M Kuhn et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1999•Referencias: 18

OBJECTIVES: The relation of physician performance to physician training and experience is not well understood. The aim of this study was to examine whether indicators of physician background and experience were associated with an objective measure of physician performance. METHODS: Physician background information obtained from the Directory of Board-Certified Medical Specialists was linked to physician risk-adjusted mortality rates obtained from…
