Open Access•Jane Witbrodt, Lee Ann Kaskutas et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Drug Problems•2008•Referencias: 26

This study adds to a growing literature showing that definitions for “standard drinks” are often difficult to conceptualize and that people often underestimate their actual drink sizes. As part of an intervention aimed at reducing negative neonatal and maternal outcomes, insured at-risk women were asked to identify the vessels from which they drank each of six beverages (n=266). We calculated differences between their actual and standard drink si…

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the relation between alcohol use and utilization of health services during a 3-year period in a sample of 4,264 adult respondents to a member health survey in a health maintenance organization. METHODS: Respondents were categorized as abstainers (no drinks in the past year, n = 1,139), lighter drinkers (less than seven drinks/week, n = 2,330), moderate drinkers (seven to 13 drinks/week, n = 498), and heavier drinke…

  • The risk of hospitalization for ischemic heart disease among Asian Americans in northern California

Arthur L Klatsky, Irene S Tekawa et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1994•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 9

To supplement sparse data about ischemic heart disease in Asian Americans, hospitalization risk was prospectively examined in a group of Asian Americans living in Northern California. Analyses used Cox models with ischemic heart disease risk traits as covariables. With Whites as the referent category, relative risks by ethnic group were as follows: Chinese, 0.6 (P = .001); Japanese, 1.0 (P = .97); Filipinos, 1.0 (P = .95); South Asians, 3.7 (P

  • Cardiovascular risk factors among Asian Americans living in northern California

Arthur L Klatsky, Mary Anne Armstrong•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1991•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 17

BACKGROUND. Recent substantial immigration has created large population subsets of Asian Americans in the United States. Available data about cardiovascular risk factors in these persons are sparse. METHODS. This study examined data among 13,031 persons self-classified as 5951 Chinese, 4211 Filipinos, 1703 Japanese, and 1166 other Asians. Covariates in regression analyses were age, smoking, alcohol, education, and marital status. RESULTS. Chinese…

  • Alcohol Use and Later Hospitalization Experience

    Mary Anne Armstrong, Arthur L Klatsky•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1989

As an indicator of hospitalization costs, the number of hospitalized days among 82,430 white and black adult health maintenance organization (HMO) members was studied. Baseline data were collected at health examinations from 1978 to 1982. Using all hospitalizations from 1978 to 1983 that were not related to pregnancy and that occurred after examination, multiple regression analyses for each race-sex subgroup were controlled for alcohol use (eight…
