Unmet Hearing Health Care Needs
Objectives. We evaluated the use of hearing health care services (hearing testing and hearing aids) by adults aged 21 to 84 years. Methods. Hearing was tested and medical and hearing health histories were obtained as part of the Beaver Dam Offspring Study between 2005 and 2008 (n = 3285, mean age = 49 years). Results. Of the cohort, 34% (55% of participants aged ≥ 70 years) had a hearing test in the past 5 years. In multivariate modeling, older a…
Ten-year change in self-rated quality of life in a type 1 diabetes population
Determinants of Hearing Aid Acquisition in Older Adults
Objectives. We determined factors associated with hearing aid acquisition in older adults. Methods. We conducted a population-based, prospective study that used information from 3 examinations performed on study participants as part of the Epidemiology of Hearing Loss Study (1993–2005). We included participants (n = 718; mean age = 70.5 years) who exhibited hearing loss at baseline or the first follow-up and had no prior history of hearing aid us…
Life‐style Correlates of Tooth Loss in an Adult Midwestern Population
Tooth loss is common in older persons and is associated with many risk factors including education, smoking, and heavy drinking. It is possible that modifying these may influence risk of tooth loss
The Impact of Hearing Loss on Quality of Life in Older Adults
PURPOSE: The authors investigate the impact of hearing loss on quality of life in a large population of older adults. DESIGN AND METHODS: Data are from the 5-year follow-up Epidemiology of Hearing Loss Study, a population-based longitudinal study of age-related hearing impairment conducted in Beaver Dam, WI. Participants (N = 2,688) were 53-97 years old (mean = 69 years) and 42% were male. Difficulties with communication were assessed by using th…
Cost-Effectiveness of Strategies for Detecting Diabetic Retinopathy
A computer model has been developed to determine cost-effectiveness of screening and treatment for diabetic retinopathy from a societal viewpoint. This model was used to evaluate biannual and annual screening programs using ophthalmoscopy, fundus photography with a "nonmydriatic camera," and photography with a "mydriatic camera." Computations were performed for three subpopulations formed by patients with younger onset diabetes (age at diagnosis …
