  • A scoping review of person-centred maternity care service in humanitarian and fragile settings

Open Access•Wubshet Debebe Negash, Asmamaw Atnafu et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2025

INTRODUCTION: Women who live in humanitarian settings are three times more likely to die than those who live in peaceful environments. Person-centred maternity care (PCMC) is a fundamental human right for every woman, yet it is often overlooked in humanitarian contexts. This scoping review aims to summarise person-centred maternity healthcare in fragile and humanitarian contexts. METHODS: A scoping review of quantitative and/or qualitative approa…

  • The development of a caregiver intervention to address child mental health in settings of complex humanitarian emergency

Open Access•Sally Carter, Alison L Calear et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2025

A caregiver intervention to support child mental health in CHEs is available. It's development using multi-method, co-design processes will ensure its relevance and acceptability to target populations. Further research to evaluate the effectiveness and long-term effectiveness of the intervention is warranted

  • Methodological issues of retrospective surveys for measuring mortality of highly clustered diseases

Open Access•Grazia Caleo, Kamalini Lokuge et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2024

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of empirical data on design effects (DEFF) for mortality rate for highly clustered data such as with Ebola virus disease (EVD), along with a lack of documentation of methodological limitations and operational utility of mortality estimated from cluster-sampled studies when the DEFF is high. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this paper are to report EVD mortality rate and DEFF estimates, and discuss the methodological limit…

  • Cost-effectiveness analysis of a maternal pneumococcal vaccine in low-income, high-burden settings such as Sierra Leone

Open Access•Gizem Mayis Bilgin, Syarifah Liza Munira et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

Maternal pneumococcal vaccines have been proposed as a method of protecting infants in the first few months of life. In this paper, we use results from a dynamic transmission model to assess the cost-effectiveness of a maternal pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine from both healthcare and societal perspectives. We estimate the costs of delivering a maternal pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine, the healthcare costs averted, and productivity losses …

  • Covid-19 vaccination strategies in settings with limited rollout capacity

Open Access•Gizem Mayis Bilgin, Kamalini Lokuge et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Our paper supports current WHO SAGE vaccine prioritisation guidelines (released January 2022). Individuals who are at the highest risk of developing severe outcomes should be prioritised, and opportunistic vaccination strategies considered in settings with limited rollout capacity

  • Acute respiratory infection symptoms and Covid-19 testing behaviour

    Open Access•Sonopant Joshi, Katina D’Onise et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

There were relatively high rates of self-reported acute respiratory infection during a period of very low COVID-19 prevalence and low rate of coronavirus testing among symptomatic respondents. Ongoing monitoring of testing uptake, including in higher-risk groups, and possible interventions to improve testing uptake is key to early detection of disease

  • Maternal health after Ebola

    Open Access•James W T Elston, James Elston et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2019•Referencias: 32

Sierra Leone has the world’s highest estimated maternal mortality. Following the 2014–16 Ebola outbreak, we described health outcomes and health-seeking behaviour amongst pregnant women to inform health policy. In October 2016–January 2017, we conducted a sequential mixed-methods study in urban and rural areas of Tonkolili District comprising: household survey targeting women who had given birth since onset of the Ebola outbreak; structured inter…

  • Protocol for a cluster-randomised controlled trial evaluating the impact of a preschool-based capacity building intervention on intimate partner violence and substance misuse in Sri Lanka

Open Access•Kamalini Lokuge, Polly Wallace et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

This study is registered with the Sri Lankan Clinical Trials Registry (2017/038) and has been submitted to ClinicalTrials.gov (U.S National Institutes of Health) under the title "Randomized control trial: preschool-based training and support programs to reduce intimate partner violence (IPV) by addressing alcohol and drug misuse in young families in Sri Lanka"; Registration number: NCT03341455 ; Registration date: 14 November 2017

  • The factors affecting household transmission dynamics and community compliance with Ebola control measures

Open Access•Grazia Caleo, Jennifer Duncombe et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

Transmission occurred primarily in a few large households, with prolonged transmission and a high death toll. Return of a survivor to the village and more effective implementation of control strategies coincided with increased compliance to control measures, with few subsequent cases. We propose key recommendations for management of EVD outbreaks based on this experience

  • Implementation of a national school-based Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine campaign in Fiji

    Open Access•Sophie F La Vincente, D Mielnik et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

This is the first reported experience of HPV introduction in a Pacific Island nation. In a challenging environment with limited community knowledge of HPV and cervical cancer, media controversy and a short lead-time for community education, Fiji has implemented an HPV vaccine campaign that was largely acceptable to the community and achieved a high level of participation. Community sensitisation and education is critical and should include a focu…

  • Conflict in the Indian Kashmir Valley II

Open Access•Kenneth De Jong, Saskia van de Kam et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2008

The ongoing conflict exacts a huge toll on the communities' mental well-being. We found high levels of psychological distress that impacts on daily life and places a burden on the health system. Ongoing feelings of personal vulnerability (not feeling safe) was associated with high levels of psychological distress. Community mental health programmes should be considered as a way reduce the pressure on the health system and improve socio-economic f…

  • Conflict in the Indian Kashmir Valley I

Open Access•Kenneth De Jong, Nathan Ford et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2008

The civilian population in Kashmir is exposed to high levels of violence, as demonstrated by the high frequency of deliberate events as detention, hostage, and torture. The reported violence may result in substantial health, including mental health problems. Males reported significantly more confrontations with almost all violent events; this can be explained by higher participation in outdoor activities
