Recreating the past; Revivalism in Northeastern India
In this article I would like to introduce the problems of reviving a ritual once it has disappeared without a trace, posing the modern actors an inter esting set of dilemmas. The paper centres upon the example of the Ahom, an ethnic group in Northeast India which over the past centuries has lost trace almost completely of the culture of its Southeast Asian forebears. Kaempfer and Thai history
The 39-year old Engelbert Kaempfer sighted the Siamese coast on 1 June 1690, and on 7 June his ship entered the river Chao Phraya, and reached the Dutch residence “Amsterdam”. Three days later he arrived in the Thai capital, Ayutthaya. Almost a month later, on 4 July, Kaempfer's boat began its journey downriver, spending some days loading goods at “Amsterdam”, and on 10 July he left Siamese territory, continuing his journey to Japan

In view of the lengthy descriptions of tattooing from many other regions in Southeast Asia, it is odd that the Chao Phraya basin receives but little attention. The custom is usually not mentioned, or is given a passing reference as one rather old-fashioned habit to which modern observers need pay little regard.
