UK public reaction to carbon dioxide transport and temporary storage at ports
Achieving net zero carbon dioxide emissions will require investment in large-scale logistical infrastructure to remove, transport, and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, exhaust gases, and waste streams from industrial plants. Successful implementation of carbon capture, storage (CCS) will depend on stakeholder investment and public agreement. Evidence of how the public perceive methods of CCS and their preferences among potentially viable…
Public response to decarbonisation through alternative shipping fuels
Although shipping is the most energy efficient method of transporting trade goods it is held accountable for 2–3% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The shipping industry is exploring pathways to carbon–neutral fuels to help eliminate GHG emissions by 2050. To date research on alternative fuels has not considered public opinion; it remains unclear whether the public will support alternative shipping fuels, or whether public opposition migh…
Articulated dissent and immediacy
Purpose In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, this study aims to explore how working remotely might impact the superior–subordinate relationship. Specifically, this study examines how immediacy explains articulated dissent, considers how an individual’s attitudes toward online communication predicts immediacy and articulated dissent and compares these relationships in England, Australia and the USA. Design/methodology/approach Three nations were…
Public engagement with emerging technologies
Researchers disagree on the extent that brief survey methods accurately reflect citizens’ opinions of unfamiliar scientific concepts. We examine whether encouraging participants to engage in more reflective thinking affects their perceptions of emerging climate technologies. Drawing on dual-process theories of reasoning, we apply experimental manipulations to encourage fast, intuitive thinking or slow, reflective thinking when responding to an on…
Predicting behaviour
Despite years of refinement and improvement to questionnaire design, the need remains to identify effective, but ‘user-friendly’ questioning procedures to predict behaviour, without compromising predictive performance. Questionnaires developed to predict behaviour typically use an attitudinal approach. However, those types of questionnaires are associated with increased respondent fatigue, decreased question comprehension, opposition to question …
Empirical Generalization in Marketing
Empirical generalization seeks patterns that can be reproduced across diverse data sets to support the development of higher order theory. It values parsimonious explanation and extensive replication rather than the regression methods commonly used in marketing. This approach has led to many discoveries about consumer behavior, most of which are summarized by the NBD‐Dirichlet model of purchase incidence and brand choice.
Polling Accuracy in a Multiparty Election
How accurate are political opinion polls in multiparty elections? Many countries have proportional representation systems with low vote thresholds for parliamentary representation. Germany has such a system, as do Israel, Poland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, the Republic of Macedonia, Romania, and South Africa. Minor parties are a viable voting choice in these countries, resulting in multiparty elections. Despite this, there is…
Predicting Elections from Politicians' Faces
People are quick to infer the character of others from their faces. Plato believed that this tendency would cause people to elect inferior leaders (Plato, 1901). Modern research has found that the predisposition to make snap judgments affects hiring decisions (Meehl, 1965). Moreover, work on thin-slice judgments suggests that social evaluations may be made very quickly, to the extent that they are an automatic rather than a controlled process. Am…
