Open Access•Katrina Witt, Anne Stewart et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2025

BACKGROUND: Self-harm is very common in young people and is associated with suicide. Rates of both self-harm and suicide have increased in young people, particularly in females. There is a clear need to identify new approaches to prevent repeat self-harm. METHOD: We significantly update and build on previous reviews with the aim of identifying issues in research relevant to clinical practice. We identify challenges in developing, implementing and…

  • The Use of Helplines and Telehealth Support in Aotearoa/New Zealand During Covid-19 Pandemic Control Measures

Open Access•Anna Pavlova, Katrina Witt et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

COVID-19, related interventions, and measures of control were associated with an increase in contacts to helplines. However, the extent of the demand increases was lower than observed internationally. Moreover, in Aotearoa/New Zealand the reasons for increases in demand were often beyond the COVID-19 pandemic and measures of control

Open Access•Anna Pavlova, Bonnie Scarth et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

COVID-19 and the measures of pandemic control were associated with an increase in innovative solutions from service providers. Open Access•Katrina Witt, Allison Milner et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The aim of this study was to investigate whether depressive symptoms reported during adolescence are associated with subsequent educational and employment outcomes, including whether experiences of depressive symptoms in adolescence are associated with higher exposures to adverse psychosocial job stressors among those who were employed in emerging adulthood. • A Pilot Case-Control Study of the Social Media Activity Following Cluster and Non-Cluster Suicides in Australia

Open Access•Phillip Cheuk Fung Law, Lay San Too et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Social media may play a role in the "contagion" mechanism thought to underpin suicide clusters. Our pilot case-control study presented a novel methodological approach to examining whether Facebook activity following cluster and non-cluster suicides differed. We used a scan statistic to identify suicide cluster cases occurring in spatiotemporal clusters and matched each case to 10 non-cluster control suicides. We identified the Facebook accounts o…

Open Access•Jo Robinson, Katrina Witt et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

The prevention of suicide and suicide-related behaviour are key policy priorities in Australia and internationally. The World Health Organization has recommended that member states develop self-harm surveillance systems as part of their suicide prevention efforts. This is also a priority under Australia's Fifth National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Plan. The aim of this paper is to describe the development of a state-based self-harm monit…

  • Repeat Self-Harm Following Hospital-Presenting Intentional Drug Overdose among Young People—A National Registry Study

Open Access•Caroline Daly, Eve Griffin et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Young males are at increased risk of repeat self-harm and method-switching following IDO and the type and quantity of drugs taken are further indicators of risk. Interventions targeting IDO among young people are needed that ensure that mental health assessments are undertaken and which address access to drugs

Open Access•Nina Stefanac, Hetrick et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

We showed that suicide rates among young females, but not young males, increased over the study period. Patterns were observed in the use of major suicide methods with hanging the most frequently used method among both sexes and more likely among younger and Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander groups. Findings highlight the need to broaden current conceptualizations of youth suicide to one increasingly involving young females, and strengthen the ca…
