  • Regional variations on Russian chaos

    Open Access•Robert J Mcintyre, Robert McIntyre•ARTICLE•Communist and Post-Communist…•1996

Conventional economic “transition” policies work poorly in developing economies, but produce disastrous results when applied within the context of Soviet-type economic and social institutions. There are clear structural reasons which take account of the very different “embedded” relationships and make the current crisis in the Russian Republic explicable, if not easily remediable. Analyses of the regional differences in the economic and social me…

  • Collective Agriculture in Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union

    Robert J Mcintyre, Robert McIntyre•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•1993

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Communist states of Eastern Europe, there have been few attempts to decollectivize agriculture in these regions except where forces originating outside agriculture have tried to destroy the collective system, and resistance has sprung up whenever the idea has been raised. This absence of pressure for decollectivization has been puzzling to Western readers nurtured on "worst case" depictions of Soviet…

Michaël Green, Michael E Green et al.•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•1990

Grace Lee Boggs (MR, February 1990) attacks the practice of science as inherently Eurocentric, irretrievably linked to capitalism and imperialism, and necessarily estranging us from each other and from our planet. There is some truth in this; science did grow up in Europe, clearly linked to the development of capitalism and imperialism. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.C…

After hearing a lecture on free will and determinism, 58 junior and senior students volunteered to respond to a scale designed to assess an individual's position on the issue. 11 days following the administration of the scale, students were given an essay examination which asked them to specify and defend their views on free will and determinism. Two judges graded the essays independently and provided assessments of students' positions on free wi…

  • The Von Restorff Isolation Effect in Response and Serial Order Learning

I-Ning Huang, Joan Scale et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1976•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 1

With an alternate study-test procedure, 254 college students attempted either to free-recall or rearrange in order items of an 11-CVC serial list to a criterion of two consecutive perfect trials. Ss learned the list with or without an isolate which was placed on each of the 11 serial positions. The main findings were as follows: (a) While the reconstruction condition required fewer study trials to criterion than the free-recall condition, the iso…
