  • Exploring consumer preferences for wild meat and other animal proteins in Gamba, Gabon

Open Access•James McNamara, Landry Tchignoumba et al.•ARTICLE•People and Nature•2026

The town of Gamba in southwest Gabon represents an exceptional example of how the development of an extractive industry (in this case oil production) may impact wild meat consumption in an area of global importance for biodiversity. Studies in the 1990s identified an active wild meat trade; however, no studies have been undertaken since, and nothing is currently known about consumers' protein preferences. This knowledge is essential to manage pro…

  • Bushmeat consumption frequency and preferences among rural households in a West African savanna landscape

    Open Access•Hannah N K Sackey, James McNamara et al.•ARTICLE•People and Nature•2025

The drivers of consumer demand for bushmeat are relatively well studied in tropical forest systems, but much less so in savanna areas. This is important because differing ecological and socio‐economic conditions lead to different factors affecting the relationship between local communities and their natural resources. Northern Ghana is an understudied savanna area, with a recognized cross‐border and long‐distant bushmeat trade. Understanding the …

  • Tacitus’ Wonders

James McNamara, Victoria Emma Pagán•BOOK•Tacitus’ Wonders•2022•Citada por: 1

This volume approaches the broad topic of wonder in the works of Tacitus, encompassing paradox, the marvellous and the admirable. Recent scholarship on these themes in Roman literature has tended to focus on poetic genres, with comparatively little attention paid to historiography: Tacitus, whose own judgments on what is worthy of note have often differed in interesting ways from the preoccupations of his readers, is a fascinating focal point for…

  • Lost in Germania

    Open Access•James McNamara, James David McNamara•CHAPTER•Unspoken Rome•2021

Tacitus’ Germania is notable for its absences: lacking a preface and programmatic statements, and being the only ethnographic monograph to have survived from Greco-Roman antiquity, readers have often leapt to fill in its perceived blanks. This chapter aims at redressing the effects of overdetermined readings by interpreting the text’s absences as significant in their own right.

  • Pliny, Tacitus and the Monuments of Pallas

    Open Access•James McNamara, James David McNamara•ARTICLE•The Classical Quarterly•2021•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 12

This article is a discussion of Plin. Ep . 7.29 and Ep . 8.6, in which he presents his reaction to seeing the grave monument of Marcus Antonius Pallas, the freedman and minister of the Emperor Claudius, beside the Via Tiburtina. The monument records a senatorial vote of thanks to Pallas, and Pliny expresses intense indignation at the Senate's subservience and at the power and influence wielded by a freedman. This article compares Pliny's letters …
