Built environment and cardio‐metabolic health
Built environment attributes may be related to cardio‐metabolic diseases (e.g. type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke) and their risk factors, potentially by influencing residents' physical activity. However, existing literature reviews on the built environment and health for the most part focus on obesity as the outcome and rely on cross‐sectional studies. This systematic review synthesized current evidence on longitudinal relationships betwe…
Television Viewing Time and Mortality
Background— Television viewing time, the predominant leisure-time sedentary behavior, is associated with biomarkers of cardiometabolic risk, but its relationship with mortality has not been studied. We examined the associations of prolonged television viewing time with all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer, and non-CVD/noncancer mortality in Australian adults. Methods and Results— Television viewing time in relation to subsequent all-ca…
Associations of neighbourhood greenness with physical and mental health
BACKGROUND: Studies have shown associations between health indices and access to "green" environments but the underlying mechanisms of this association are not clear. OBJECTIVES: To examine associations of perceived neighbourhood "greenness" with perceived physical and mental health and to investigate whether walking and social factors account for the relationships. METHODS: A mailed survey collected the following data from adults (n = 1895) in A…

Delayed compensatory cigarette consumption after a workplace smoking ban
Reductions in cigarette consumption among smokers frequently seen after implementation of a worksite smoking ban may diminish over time. This effect is more likely to occur when the initial response to a smoking ban is a large reduction in cigarette consumption
Composite cardiovascular risk outcomes of a work-site intervention trial
OBJECTIVES: Two composite outcome measures were used to assess the efficacy of work-site risk factor interventions: the Framingham multiple logistic function and a standardized composite equation that was an unweighted combination of risk factors. METHODS: Twenty-eight work sites in Sydney, Australia, were randomly assigned to health risk assessment, risk factor education, behavioral counseling, or behavioral counseling plus incentives. RESULTS: …
Trends in prevalence and acceptance of workplace smoking bans among indoor workers in South Australia
The data suggest that smoking bans are now the norm for indoor workers and that further gains in promoting and supporting workplace bans will be made by directing efforts at smaller workplaces, where unrestricted smoking is most prevalent
Serial mass-media campaigns to promote physical activity
Changes associated with two serial, nationwide, mass-media-based campaigns to promote physical activity conducted by the National Heart Foundation of Australia in 1990 and 1991 were examined. Surveys conducted before and after each campaign found statistically significant differences in message awareness (46% vs 71% in 1990; 63% vs 74% in 1991). In 1990, there were significant increases in walking, particularly among older people, and in intentio…
Treatment issues
Dr Abrams is a nationally recognised researcher in addictive behaviours and chronic disease prevention who has contributed much to our understanding of substance abuse treatment, both empirically and conceptually.I'm particularly pleased that he will be making the presentation this morning that will set the stage for our discussion of the behavioural therapy components of smoking cessation treatment
Work-site cardiovascular risk reduction
OBJECTIVES. This study reports an efficacy trial of four work-site health promotion programs. It was predicted that strategies making use of behavioral counseling would produce a greater reduction in cardiovascular disease risk factors than screening and educational strategies. METHODS. Twenty-eight work sites were randomly allocated to a health risk assessment, risk factor education, behavioral counseling, or behavioral counseling plus incentive…
Effects of workplace smoking bans on cigarette consumption
A sample of staff working in the Australian Public Service (n = 2113) were surveyed two to four weeks before a mandated total ban on workplace smoking was introduced, and again five to six months later. Among the 391 smokers on whom complete data were available, the workplace smoking bans were associated with reduced rates of smoking, particularly among heavier smokers where the reduction in consumption was over 25 percent
Social and behavioural dimensions of community health
A course is described which presented views, to fourth year students in psychology, on the contributions that the psychologist potentially can make to community health as practitioners working collaboratively with a range of other professions in the health care System. Drawing upon contributions from other disciplines a broad range of views were described and evaluated. Data were available from student evaluations of the course and these are pres…
