Diversity of Release Patterns for Jail Detainees
Objectives. We sought to develop a detailed description of the variety of jail release patterns and to learn what factors affect the length of stay (LOS). Methods. The main data set for the study came from a biennial Bureau of Justice Statistics survey on felony defendants in large urban counties. Results. The median LOS for the felony defendants was 7 days. One quarter of the jails had a median LOS of less than 2 days; median LOS for 75% of the …

An Introduction to a Study of Instruments
An instrument is any object which makes possible the attainment of desired ends. It is not essential to the being of the instrument that it be inanimate, worked over, or its mode of operation understood. A pigeon can carry a message; a stone as well as a hammer can be employed to break a glass; a child can start an automobile. The instrument need not function in the interests of men, be set into operation by living beings, or even be used at all.…

The Purpose of Purpose
Most of man's organs can be utilized in more than one way. His hands can be used to grip and to push, his throat can serve to swallow and to expel, he uses his tongue to taste and to talk, his nose to breathe and to smell. If each mode of activity required the use of a different organ, a man would have to be much more cumbersome than he now is, or he would have to give up doing some of the things of which he is now capable. He would need at least…

Its heart, its liver, lungs and brain, all its nerves and tissues, were in existence some time before, constantly exercised in embryonic ways. The new born infant is an old campaigner on quite familiar terrain. The embryo begins as a single cell feeding on the food its mother provides. Almost at once it becomes too large, too sluggish and inefficient for its own good, and must e…
