  • What is normal body weight? Perceptions around “average” and “healthy” body weight among adolescents in Indiana

    Open Access•J M Cullin•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2021

OBJECTIVES: Biological normalcy is a framework that investigates relationship(s) between statistical norms and normative views/beliefs around particular traits. This study assessed the relationships between perceptions of average body weight, healthy body weight, and weight status among adolescents. METHODS: Adolescents recruited in southcentral Indiana, United States (n = 123) completed online questionnaires for demographics and body weight perc…

  • Mind the gap

    Open Access•J M Cullin, J Vitzthum et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2021

Training in anthropology and evolutionary science ideally prepares scholars to recognize and challenge culturally grounded views of human variation. But upon inspection we find that idealized, and thus perhaps biased, conceptualizations of what is “normal” continue to permeate evaluations of human biology and behaviors. Each of the 13 contributions in this special issue on biological normalcy tackles these concerns as they pertain to some univers…

  • Weight perception among US adults predicts cardiovascular risk when controlling for body fat percentage

    Open Access•J M Cullin, Kurt E White•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2020

OBJECTIVES: Previous research has revealed that increased obesity prevalence in the US has occurred in concert with an increase in those in overweight and obese BMI categories perceiving their weight as "about right" since the 1980s. Using biological normalcy as a framework, we assess whether individual weight perception is related to the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) when controlling for body fat percentage (BF%). METHODS: Data from the N…

  • What Do Anthropologists Mean When They Use the TermBiocultural

    Open Access•Andrea S Wiley, J M Cullin•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•2016•Citada por: 36•Referencias: 52

The term biocultural is often invoked as a unifying theme in a holistic vision of anthropology. To ascertain patterns in its use and meaning in current anthropological publications, we conducted a bibliometric review of the use of biocultural in AAA journals, Current Anthropology (CA), Annual Review of Anthropology (ARA), and in American Journal of Human Biology (AJHB) from 2000-2014. The term was found in 177 articles in the sample from AAA jour…
