  • Carbonate removal from radiocarbon samples using a “no leach” acid pretreatment to retain mobile organic carbon

Open Access•M H Garnett, Callum Murray et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026

Inorganic carbon can be a significant contaminant of radiocarbon samples. It usually occurs in the form of carbonate which must be removed prior to measurement of the organic carbon fraction in a sample. This can be achieved by an acid wash, however, this approach results in the loss of mobile organic carbon components and is therefore unsuitable for situations where all organic carbon in a sample should be retained for measurement (e.g., carbon …

  • Ramped oxidation and fine scale serial 14 C analyses of saltmarsh soils

    Open Access•Alex Houston, M H Garnett et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026

Combined ramped oxidation and radiocarbon analysis (RO- 14 C) determines the age of carbon pools that have differing thermochemical stability (decomposability), providing powerful insights for studying the carbon cycle. We performed RO- 14 C of surface soils from a saltmarsh and dated the narrowest temperature intervals so far undertaken for any samples, finding that no modern (post-bomb) 14 C contents were resolved. We compared these ramped oxid…

  • Processing of samples by ramped oxidation at the Neif Radiocarbon Laboratory, Suerc

    Open Access•M H Garnett, Naima Harman et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2025•Referencias: 31

Carbon occurs as organic and inorganic matter in numerous complex forms and mixtures. Thermal separation of sample mixtures (e.g. sediment or soil), coupled with radiocarbon analysis, is a valuable approach for investigating the source, residence time, or age of different carbon components. At the NEIF Radiocarbon Laboratory we have built equipment for thermally separating samples for radiocarbon analysis using ramped oxidation. The original inst…

  • A Time-Integrated Sampler for Radiocarbon Analysis of Aquatic Methane

    Open Access•M H Garnett, J F Dean•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•Referencias: 29

Freshwater ecosystems are responsible for a large proportion of global methane emissions to the atmosphere. The radiocarbon ( 14 C) content of this aquatic methane is useful for determining the age and source of this important greenhouse gas. Several methods already exist for the collection of aquatic methane for radiocarbon analysis, but they tend to only sample over short periods of time, which can make them unsuitable for characterizing aquati…

    Open Access•M H Garnett, R Pereira et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 27

Sample materials such as sediments and soils contain complex mixtures of different carbon-containing compounds. These bulk samples can be split into individual fractions, based on the temperature of thermal decomposition of their components. When coupled with radiocarbon ( 14 C) measurement of the isolated fractions, this approach offers the advantage of directly investigating the residence time, turnover time, source, or age of the different com…

  • A Highly Portable and Inexpensive Field Sampling Kit for Radiocarbon Analysis of Carbon Dioxide

    Open Access•M H Garnett, Josephine-Anne Newton et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2021•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 25

Radiocarbon ( 14 C) analysis of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) can be extremely useful in carbon cycle studies because it provides unique information that can infer the age and source of this greenhouse gas. Cartridges containing the CO 2 -adsorbing zeolite molecular sieve are small and highly portable, which makes them more suitable for field campaigns in remote locations compared to some other CO 2 collection methods. However, sampling with molecular s…

  • Abundant pre-industrial carbon detected in Canadian Arctic headwaters

Open Access•Joshua Dean, Ype Van Der Velde et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2017

Mobilization of soil/sediment organic carbon into inland waters constitutes a substantial, but poorly-constrained, component of the global carbon cycle. Radiocarbon (14C) analysis has proven a valuable tool in tracing the sources and fate of mobilized carbon, but aquatic 14C studies in permafrost regions rarely detect 'old' carbon (assimilated from the atmosphere into plants and soil prior to AD1950). The emission of greenhouse gases derived from…

Radiocarbon ( 14 C) analysis of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) provides unique information on the age, turnover and source of this important greenhouse gas, raising the prospect of novel scientific investigations into a range of natural and anthropogenic processes. To achieve these measurements, cartridges containing zeolite molecular sieves are a reliable and convenient method for collecting CO 2 samples. At the NERC Radiocarbon Facility (East Kilbride)…

  • A New Ramped Oxidation- 14 C Analysis Facility at the Neif Radiocarbon Laboratory, East Kilbride, Uk
