Field Degassing as a New Sampling Method for 14 C Analyses in Old Groundwater
Radiocarbon ( 14 C) activity in groundwater can be used to determine subsurface residence time up to ∼40 kyr, providing crucial information on dynamic properties of groundwater and on paleoclimate. We present ΔA 14 C and 39 Ar data collected in the Nansen, Amundsen and Makarov basins during two expeditions to the central Arctic Ocean (RV Polarstern cruises ARK IV/3, 1987 and ARK VIII/3, 1991).
