  • An Independent Assessment of Uncertainty for Radiocarbon Analysis With the New Generation High-Yield Accelerator Mass Spectrometers

    Open Access•A T Aerts-Bijma, D Paul et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2021•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 34

The radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating facility at the Centre for Isotope Research, University of Groningen went through a major upgrade in 2017 and this included installation of a MICADAS accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS). In the first 18 months, we performed 4000 sample and 3000 reference measurements. A careful evaluation of those measurement results is presented, to characterize the various sources of uncertainty and to ultimately assign, for every…

  • Radiocarbon Dating at Groningen

    Open Access•Michael W Dee, Sanne W L Palstra et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2020•Citada por: 20•Referencias: 32

The Centre for Isotope Research (CIO) at the University of Groningen has operated a radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating laboratory for almost 70 years. In 2017, the CIO received a major upgrade, which involved the relocation of the laboratory to new purpose-built premises, and the installation of a MICADAS accelerator mass spectrometer. This period of transition provides an opportunity to update the laboratory’s routine procedures. This article addresses …

  • Three Years of Δ 14 CO 2 Observations from Maize Leaves in the Netherlands and Western Europe

    Open Access•D Bozhinova, Sanne W L Palstra et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2016•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 31

Atmospheric Δ 14 CO 2 measurements are useful to investigate the regional signals of anthropogenic CO 2 emissions, despite the currently scarce observational network for Δ 14 CO 2 . Plant samples are an easily attainable alternative, which have been shown to work well as a qualitative measure of the atmospheric Δ 14 CO 2 signals integrated over the time a plant has grown. Here, we present the 14 C analysis results for 89 individual maize ( Zea ma…

  • Sample Dilution for AMS 14 C Analysis of Small Samples (30–150 μg C)

Open Access•M de Rooij, J Van Der Plicht et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2008•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 14

We investigated sample dilution as a technique for accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon analysis of very small samples (down to 30 μg). By diluting such samples up to a total weight of 200 μg, we can still perform reliable AMS measurements and improve the success rate significantly for targets that are difficult to measure. A disadvantage of this dilution technique is a loss of measurement precision. In addition, calculations of the 14…

  • New Guidelines for δ 13 C Measurements

    Tyler B Coplen, Willi A Brand et al.•ARTICLE•Analytical Chemistry•2006

Consistency of delta13C measurements can be improved 39-47% by anchoring the delta13C scale with two isotopic reference materials differing substantially in 13C/12C. It is recommended that delta13C values of both organic and inorganic materials be measured and expressed relative to VPDB (Vienna Peedee belemnite) on a scale normalized by assigning consensus values of -46.6 per thousand to L-SVEC lithium carbonate and +1.95 per thousand to NBS 19 c…

  • High-Accuracy 14 C Measurements for Atmospheric CO 2 Samples by AMS

    Open Access•H A J Meijer, M H Pertuisot et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2006•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 19

In this paper, we investigate how to achieve high-accuracy radiocarbon measurements by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) and present measurement series (performed on archived CO 2 ) of 14 CO 2 between 1985 and 1991 for Point Barrow (Alaska) and the South Pole. We report in detail the measurement plan, the error sources, and the calibration scheme that enabled us to reach a combined uncertainty of better than ±3%. The δ 13 C correction and a sug…

  • Two ice-core δ18O records from Svalbard illustrating climate and sea-ice variability over the last 400 years

    Open Access•Elisabeth Isaksson, Jack Kohler et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2005•Referencias: 2

Ice cores from the relatively low-lying ice caps in Svalbard have not been widely exploited in climatic studies owing to uncertainties about the effect of meltwater percolation. However, results from two new Svalbard ice cores, at Lomonosovfonna and Austfonna, have shown that with careful site selection, high-resolution sampling and multiple chemical analyses it is possible to recover ice cores from which part of the annual signals are preserved,…

  • Automatic AMS Sample Combustion and CO 2 Collection

    Open Access•A T Aerts-Bijma, J Van Der Plicht et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2001•Citada por: 38•Referencias: 6

In Groningen, all organic samples for accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) are combusted in an automatic Elemental Analyzer, coupled to an Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer and Cryogenic Trapping System. The Gas Chromatographic (GC) column, part of the Elemental Analyzer system, appeared to be the main cause for memory effects. Therefore we modified the Elemental Analyzer, such that the trapped CO 2 no longer passed the GC column. Our system modific…
