Abstracts of the 14th International Radiocarbon Conference
Experiments were started in 1984 at the Geological Survey of Finland (GSF) with a new 14C dating system that consists of a passive shield of 90-year-old iron, a liquid-scintillation anticoincidence guard and three CO2 proportional counters of conventional size. 14 C apparent ages along with δ 13 C values for three different fractions of humic matter (HM) isolated from a suite of four paleosols (PAs) interbedded within tephra are reported. The dated HM fractions were: 1) HA, the easily released humic acids; 2) HA tot , the bulk of humic acids; 3) RES, the insoluble HM.
