Geophysical Investigations at Ancient Pistyros in Northern Greece
This paper discusses the geophysical survey conducted within the fortified settlement of ancient Pistyros in N. Greece. According to archaeological data and the ancient written sources, the city was founded at the end of the 7th century BC. Pistyros based its prosperity on the processing of metals, which were abundant in the surrounding area, and probably on the trade in wine and textiles. Its prosperity continued until the 1st century BC. The in…

Radiocarbon Dating of Aghios Antonios, Potos, and Intersite Chronological Variability in South Thasos, Greece
Radiocarbon dates obtained for the coastal hilltop settlement of Aghios Antonios Potos in south Thasos are statistically treated to define the absolute chronology for the start and the end of the various habitation and cultural phases at the site. The location was first occupied during the Final Neolithic (FN) between 3800 and 3600 BC, extending this much contested phase to the lowest up to now record for Thasos and the northern Greece. The site …

Les figurines en terre cuite dans les sépultures d’enfants en Grèce ancienne
This paper illustrates our methodological approach to archaeological funerary ensembles by focussing on the specific, but controversial, iconographical type, of a naked girl in sitting attitude, without a seat, that is still commonly called “doll” or “hierodoulos”. These representations are quite often found between the 4th and 1st centuries BC both in funerary contexts, where they form part of the grave goods accompanying mainly children and gir…

Plant offerings from the classical necropolis of Limenas, Thasos, northern Greece
Funeral pyres identified at a fourth-century BC cemetery on Thasos have produced a range of plants. The authors show that strongly represented among them are pomegranate, garlic and grape, as well as bread - foodstuffs for funeral feasts and with significance for religious practice
The ‘Thracian’ pottery of South-East Europe
From the southern Balkans to the region of Middle Donau, so-called ‘Thracian’ pottery is dominant during the historical period. Its co-existence with wheel-made pottery also has a long history in Aegean Thrace. In the city of Mesembria-Zone, barrel-shaped urns and one-handled cups represent the ‘classical period’ of this tradition. Until now, there was no example of a site in northern Greece with pottery exclusively of this type. This ‘missing li…
L'organisation de l'espace dans deux ateliers de potiers traditionnels de Thasos
The first part of this article comprises a detailed description of the installations in the two workshops, covered and open-air, and emphasis is given to their function and architectural interdependence. In the second part, based on a detailed examination, the positions of each structure are shown to be the result of a detailed plan, drawn up in advance of the work of construction. It takes into account the most fundamental factors relating to th…
