  • An Independent Assessment of Uncertainty for Radiocarbon Analysis With the New Generation High-Yield Accelerator Mass Spectrometers

    Open Access•A T Aerts-Bijma, D Paul et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2021•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 34

The radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating facility at the Centre for Isotope Research, University of Groningen went through a major upgrade in 2017 and this included installation of a MICADAS accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS). In the first 18 months, we performed 4000 sample and 3000 reference measurements. A careful evaluation of those measurement results is presented, to characterize the various sources of uncertainty and to ultimately assign, for every…

  • Dating of Cremated Bones

    Open Access•J N Lanting, A T Aerts-Bijma et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2001•Citada por: 75•Referencias: 6

When dating unburnt bone, bone collagen, the organic fraction of the bone, is used. Collagen does not survive the heat of the cremation pyre, so dating of cremated bone has been considered impossible. Structural carbonate in the mineral fraction of the bone, however, survives the cremation process. We developed a method of dating cremated bone by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS), using this carbonate fraction. Here we present results for a var…

  • Automatic AMS Sample Combustion and CO 2 Collection

    Open Access•A T Aerts-Bijma, J Van Der Plicht et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2001•Citada por: 38•Referencias: 6

In Groningen, all organic samples for accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) are combusted in an automatic Elemental Analyzer, coupled to an Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer and Cryogenic Trapping System. The Gas Chromatographic (GC) column, part of the Elemental Analyzer system, appeared to be the main cause for memory effects. Therefore we modified the Elemental Analyzer, such that the trapped CO 2 no longer passed the GC column. Our system modific…
