  • Late Quaternary Geological History of the Dead Sea Area, Israel

Open Access•Yoseph Yechieli, Mordeckai Magaritz et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1993

A 34.5 m borehole, which was drilled near the Dead Sea coast (altitude -394 m) in the southern part of the fan delta of Wadi Zeelim, reveals the geological history of that area from the latest Pleistocene to present. The depositional time frame is based on six 14 C dates and two U-Th dates. An erosional (or nondepositional) period is implied by the hiatus between 21,100 yr B.P. (U-Th age, depth 33 m) and 11,315 yr B.P. ( 14 C age, depth 32 m). A …

  • Pleistocene Paleoclimate of the Arid Region of Israel as Recorded in Calcite Deposits Along Regional Transverse Faults and in Veins

Open Access•A Avigour, Mordeckai Magaritz et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1992

The δ 18 O and δ 13 C values of the calcites associated with E-W and NE-SW transverse faults in the Negev, Israel, indicate that calcite was deposited from meteoric water. A regional change in the δ 18 O and δ 13 C values was observed. The 18 O content in the calcite increases, from the southwestern (δ 18 O = −17.8‰) to the northeastern (δ 18 O = −2.9‰) part of the region. The δ 13 C values show the opposite trend of the 13 C content decrease: fr…

  • The Holocene climatic record of the salt caves of Mount Sedom Israel

Open Access•Amos Frumkin, Mordeckai Magaritz et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1991•Citada por: 19

Mount Sedom is a salt diapir, on the southwestern shore of the Dead Sea, which has been rising above the local base level throughout the Holocene. Karst development within the salt body has kept pace with the rise forming subhorizontal cave passages with vertical shafts. Wood fragments found embedded in flood sediments that were deposited in the cave passages yielded 14C ages ranging from c. 7100 to 200 BP. A palaeoclimatic sequence was construct…

  • Late-holocene coastal evolution in the Hanstholm-Hjardemaal region, NW Denmark, Morphology, sediments and dating

Dan Bowman, Christian Christiansen et al.•ARTICLE•Geografisk Tidsskrift-Danish…•1989•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 22

Bowman, Dan. Christiansen, Christian & Magaritz, Mordeckai: Late-holocene coastal evolution in the Hanstholm-Hjardemaal region, NW Denmark. Morphology, sediments and dating. Geo- grafisk Tidsskrift 89: 49–57. København 1989. Raised gravelly spits and beach ridges were studied as components of the late-holocene coastal evolution in NW Jutland. Two gravelly spits up to 8–9 m above the present sea level were dated 4000–4700 Y BP by oyster shells, i.…

  • Stratigraphy and Isotope Records of Middle and Late Pleistocene Mollusks from a Continuous Corehole in the Hula Basin, Northern Jordan Valley, Israel

    Open Access•Shimon Moshkovitz, Mordeckai Magaritz•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1987

Morphological changes in Melanopsis shells and the sudden disappearance of Viviparus were observed in a continuous core, representing about 700,000 yr, taken from the L-12 corehole in the Hula Basin, northern Jordan Valley, Israel. Two major events in δ 18 O values are recorded. The first, at about 435,000 yr B.P., is accompanied by a shift in δ 13 C values and indicates a shallowing phase with slightly higher evaporation. This event is concurren…

  • Amplitude of Sunspot-Dependent Radiocarbon Variations

Open Access•Mordeckai Magaritz, Israel Carmi et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1985•Referencias: 10

It has been suggested that the sunspot cycle modulates the production rate of radionuclides in the atmosphere and that these modulations can be traced in various parts of the earth surface system. On the basis of a theoretical analysis, Damon, Sternberg, and Radnell (1983) have concluded that the effects of the 11-yr cycle of sunspots should be observable in 14 C data provided the measurements are done at a 2 permil (sd) level. This conclusion is…

  • Radiocarbon—A Direct Calculation of the Period of the Grand Trend

Open Access•Israel Carmi, Ziv Sirkes et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1984•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 4

A major collective effort was made to develop a data base for establishing the relationship between 14 C and calendric ages (Stuiver, 1982). The early “cosmic schwung” fit between the two ages (Suess, 1970a, p 310) and the 10,350 yr period of the grand trend (Suess, 1970b, p 596) have recently been replaced by the period of 12,100 yr (Suess, 1980). The period of the grand trend was estimated by correlating the data with an a priori postulated sin…

  • Detection of the 36 Cl Radioisotope at the Rehovot 14UD Pelletron Accelerator

Open Access•Michael Paul, Oded Meirav et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1983•Referencias: 2

A program of accelerator mass spectrometry has been started at the Rehovot 14UD Pelletron Accelerator Laboratory. Part of the initial emphasis has been directed to the detection of the 36 Cl radioisotope. We report here on the present status of our work and describe our experimental system. Preliminary results are presented, showing that 36 Cl/Cl concentrations ranging down to 1×10 −14 could be measured with our system

  • The Climatic History of the Eastern Mediterranean as Recorded in Mollusk Shells

    Open Access•Aaron Kaufman, Mordeckai Magaritz•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1980•Referencias: 3

An 18 O/ 16 O versus 14 C age curve was constructed for unrecrystallized Holocene marine shell samples from Israel that were shown to be homogeneous populations. The surprisingly large variation in the oxygen isotopic composition (1.2‰) between 2600 and 4000 years ago is most probably due to variations in the isotopic composition of the water. This implies that either the excess of evaporation over precipitation or the Nile river discharge must h…
