  • Carbon-14 in the environment near the Belarusian and the Ignalina nuclear power plants in 2016–2025

Open Access•Jonas Mažeika, Rimantas Petrošius et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026

Carbon-14 ( 1 4C) is a critical radionuclide for environmental monitoring around nuclear facilities due to its high mobility, atmospheric prevalence, and incorporation into the biosphere via photosynthesis. This study presents the results of a 1 4C monitoring (2016–2025) in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems within the vicinities of two nuclear power plants situated 98 km apart: the newly commissioned Belarusian NPP (BelNPP) and the Ignalina NPP …

  • C and Other Radionuclides in the Environment in the Border Region of Lithuania Before the Start of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant Operation

Open Access•Jonas Mažeika, Olga Jefanova et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2022•Referencias: 18

In this paper, we analyze the background activity of anthropogenic radionuclides ( 14 C, 3 H, 137 Cs, and 239,240 Pu), emphasizing 14 C content, in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in the Lithuanian border region before the commissioning of a new nuclear power plant in Belarus (BelNPP). In terrestrial samples, the 14 C concentration varied insignificantly—from 98.6 ± 0.7 to 102.2 ± 0.8 pMC, which is close to the 14 C level in atmospheric CO 2 .…

  • Aspects and methods in reconstructing the medieval terrain and deposits in Vilnius

Open Access•Aldona Baubinienė, Regina Morkūnaitė et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2015

  • Δ 14 C and δ 13 C Variations in Organic Fractions of Baltic Sea Sediments

Open Access•Galina Lujanienė, Jonas Mažeika et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2015•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 31

This article investigates variations of Δ 14 C and δ 13 C of total organic carbon (TOC) in sediments as well as in humic acids, lipid, and phospholipid fractions isolated from the surface (0–3 cm) sediment samples collected in the Curonian Lagoon and in the Baltic Sea. This study was performed to estimate relative contributions of the marine and terrestrial inputs to organic carbon in sediments, to assess a possible effect of petroleum hydrocarbo…

  • Depositional environment and climate changes during the late Pleistocene as recorded by the Netiesos section in southern Lithuania

Open Access•Valentinas Baltrūnas, Vaida Šeirienė et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2013

  • Radiocarbon and Other Environmental Isotopes in the Groundwater of the Sites for a Planned New Nuclear Power Plant in Lithuania

Open Access•Jonas Mažeika, Tõnu Martma et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2013•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 15

The assessment of construction sites for the new Visaginas Nuclear Power Plant (Visaginas NPP), including groundwater characterization, took place over the last few years. For a better understanding of the groundwater system, studies on radiocarbon; tritium; stable isotopes of hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon; and helium content were carried out at the location of the new NPP, at the Western and Eastern sites, as well as in the near-surface repositor…

  • History of the Environment and Population of the Old Town of Klaipėda, Western Lithuania

Open Access•Dalia Kisielienė, Ieva Masiulienė et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2012•Referencias: 8

Progressive stages in the development of the Old Town region of the city of Klaipėda (in German, Memel ) were ascertained by analyzing archaeological and historical data combined with an analysis of pollen, diatom, plant macrofossil, and osteological findings as cross-referenced with radiocarbon measurements. The port city of Klaipėda, located on the eastern part of the Baltic Sea, was an important political, economic, and religious center during…
