  • Climate and solar variability recorded in Holocene laminated sediments — a preliminary assessment

  • C Dating of Laminated Sediments from Loch Ness, Scotland

    Open Access•M C Cooper, P E O'Sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1997•Referencias: 10

Radiometric and AMS radiocarbon dating of a 6-m sediment core from Loch Ness, Scotland, indicates that it represents perhaps the very end of the Late Pleistocene, and the first ca. 7500 yr of the Holocene. Counts of laminations observed in the Holocene section of the core suggest that they are present in sufficient number to constitute annual laminations (varves), an hypothesis consistent with the pollen record, which contains a sequence of zones…

  • Eutrophication

    P E O'Sullivan, P E O’Sullivan•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1995

  • Shallow and deep environmental science

    P E O'Sullivan, P E O’Sullivan•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1987

A growing field of interest in Environmentalism is Deep Ecology, or the New Philosophy of Nature. Deep Ecology rejects the principles of the present reductionist, dualistic social paradigm, in favour of one based on biospheric egalitarianism and holism. It therefore shares certain values with other radical forms of environmentalism from which it is hoped a new, truly‐holistic science may emerge. This article therefore examines the principles and …

  • Environmental science and environmental philosophy

    P E O'Sullivan, P E O’Sullivan•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1987

Several futurologist and environmentalist writers1–3 have called for a fundamental shift in Western philosophical thought, an end to the present reductionist paradigm, and the development of a new holistic, environmentally‐conscious society. It is said that this process will involve the redefinition of many social concepts, including those of Growth, Wealth, Work and Power. There is a relationship between the philosophical basis of this call for …

  • Environmental science and environmental philosophy — part 1 environmental science and environmentalism

    P E O'Sullivan, P E O’Sullivan•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1986

Several recent critiques of Western, science‐based, technological society call for a shift away from the present paradigm of reductionism to one of holism. One manifestation of this would be the development of a new kind of science which is non‐interventionist, non‐manipulative, and much more environmentally aware. The object of Part 1 of this paper is to assess the development of Environmental Science over the last twenty years, in order to test…

  • Fundamental concepts of environmental science

    P E O'Sullivan, P E O’Sullivan•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1980

Despite the recent proliferation of courses in Environmental Science/Studies, a consensus concerning the nature of the subject matter involved has yet to develop. Certain key concepts (systems, resources, the ecosystem, the ecosystem‐watershed, interdisciplinarity) have however, been identified, and the history and role of these in Environmental Science is described. An example of a foundation year undergraduate course in Environmental Science ba…

  • The ecosystem‐watershed concept in the environmental sciences — a review

    P E O'Sullivan, P E O’Sullivan•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1979

The ecosystem‐watershed concept, which originated with the Hubbard Brook Watershed Ecosystem study, provides an important framework for research into contemporary processes in many environments. Integration of freshwater lakes into the basic model allows such studies to be extended back in time, and the typicality of present‐day landscapes and processes to be adjudged. In many ecosystem‐watersheds, inputs, outputs and processes are dominated by c…
