  • An interdisciplinary review of the interplay of conflict, socio‐economic factors, and land cover and vegetation dynamics in Colombia

Open Access•Estefanía Muñoz, Jesús A Anaya et al.•ARTICLE•PLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET•2026

Societal Impact Statement Colombia's forests play a crucial role in preserving biodiversity and mitigating climate change, but they are currently facing severe degradation, particularly after the 2016 Peace Agreement. Our literature review highlights a growing research interest in this topic and demonstrates how interdisciplinary approaches combining diverse methods can enhance our understanding of the complex interplay of conflict, socioeconomic…

  • Reconstructing past fossil-fuel CO 2 concentrations using tree rings and radiocarbon in the urban area of Medellín, Colombia

Open Access•Marileny Vásquez, Wilson Lara et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

To meet international and national commitments to decrease emissions of fossil fuels, cities around the world must obtain information on their historical levels of emissions, identifying hotspots that require special attention. Direct atmospheric measurements of pollution sources are almost impossible to obtain retrospectively. However, tree rings serve as an archive of environmental information for reconstructing the temporal and spatial distrib…

  • Forecasting Atmospheric Radiocarbon Decline to Pre-Bomb Values

    Open Access•Carlos A Sierra•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2018•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 38

In this manuscript, I present an estimation of the rate of decline in atmospheric radiocarbon and the amplitude of its seasonal cycle for the past four decades for the northern and southern hemispheres, and forecast the time required to reach pre-1950 levels (i.e. Δ 14 C 14 C has decreased considerably since the 1970s and reached values below −5‰ per year since 2005. Overall, the time-series showed larger rates of radiocarbon decline in the north…

  • Monitoring ecological change during rapid socio-economic and political transitions

    Open Access•Carlos A Sierra, Miguel D Mahecha et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2017•Citada por: 10

After more than 50-years of armed conflict, Colombia is now transitioning to a more stable social and political climate due to a series of peace agreements between the government and different armed groups. Consequences of these socio-economic and political changes on ecosystems are largely uncertain, but there is growing concern about derived increases in environmental degradation. Here, we review the capacity of Colombia to monitor the state of…

  • Unambiguous and Low-Cost Determination of Growth Rates and Ages of Tropical Trees and Palms

    Open Access•Jorge I del Valle, Juan R Guarín et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2014•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 42

The determination of the age of tropical trees and palms is of significant importance for ecological studies and designing sustainable forest management plans. Radiocarbon is a powerful tool that can potentially help the determination of ages and growth rates of these plants. However, the application of 14 C analyses has one important problem for trees without annual rings and palms: the calibration of 14 C measurements with common programs such …
