Global Environments Through the Quaternary
A Record of Holocene Climate Change from Lake Geochemical Analyses in Southeastern Arabia
Lacustrine sediments from southeastern Arabia reveal variations in lake level corresponding to changes in the strength and duration of Indian Ocean Monsoon (IOM) summer rainfall and winter cyclonic rainfall. The late glacial/Holocene transition of the region was characterised by the development of mega-linear dunes. These dunes became stabilised and vegetated during the early Holocene and interdunal lakes formed in response to the incursion of th…
Ounjougou (Mali)
The area of Ounjougou consists of a series of gullies cut through Upper Pleistocene and Holocene formations on the Dogon Plateau in the Sahel at the south edge of the Sahara Desert. Here the authors have chronicled a stratified sequence of human occupation from the tenth to the second millennium BC, recording natural and anthropogenic strata containing artefacts and micro- and macro- palaeoecological remains, mostly in an excellent state of prese…
First Chrono-Cultural Reference Framework for the West African Paleolithic
Evidences of Lower and Middle Palaeolithic human settlements in sub-Saharan West Africa are relatively uncommon, poorly or not even dated, and come from surface sites or secondary stratigraphic context. The discovery, within the international research programme Palaeoenvironment and human settlement in West Africa , of an impressive Pleistocene sedimentary sequence with numerous archaeological levels in the sector of Ounjougou (Dogon Country, Mal…
Implications of Water Supply for Indigenous Americans during Holocene Aridity Phases on the Southern High Plains, USA
Springs in the 40 to 50 large lake basins (>15 km 2 ) on the southern portion of the Southern High Plains (SHP) were active during periods of aridity in the Holocene when there may have been human habitation of the area. Eolian erosion of the lake floors and lunette accretion occurred as groundwater levels declined in response to decreased groundwater recharge. The declining lake floor associated with eolian erosion allowed groundwater evaporativ…
A Middle Palaeolithic burial of a modern human at Taramsa Hill, Egypt
Discussion about a possible African origin of modern humans is hampered by the lack of Late Pleistocene skeletal material from the Nile valley, the likely passage-way from East Africa to Asia and Europe. Here we report the discovery of a burial of an anatomically modern child from southern Egypt. Its clear relation with Middle Palaeolithic chert extraction activities and a series of OSL dates, from correlative aeolian sands, suggests an age betwe…
Middle- and late-Holocene dune reactivation in the Nebraska Sand Hills, USA
A combination of optical dating of aeolian sand, and radiocarbon dating of palaeosols and interdune sediments, has allowed some refinements to the chronostratigraphy of the Nebraska Sand Hills. Our results directly confirm previous inferences that multiple phases of aeolian deposition, including megabarchan dune reactivation, occurred within the Sand Hills during the middle and late Holocene. Optical dates on stratified aeolian (barchan dune) sed…
Holocene aeolian activity in the southwestern Kalahari Desert, southern Africa
Little is known about the timing of dune-building episodes in the southwestern Kalahari Desert. Previously, arid phases when dune activity occurred have been inferred from gaps in chronologies derived from information that attests to former humid periods. To redress this, optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating was applied to sediment samples taken from a range of aeolian landforms in the SW Kalahari. Four periods of dune building are iden…
An Acheulian site near Bir Kiseiba in the Darb el Arba'in Desert, Egypt
A small concentration of Acheulian cleavers and handaxes within the driest region on Earth adds to the increasing evidence that the eastern Sahara was considerably more verdant during the Middle Pleistocene than it is today. The similarities to stone artifact assemblages of Acheulian sites in sub-Saharan Africa and in the Levant support the evidence for the movement of hominids, utilizing the Kombewa lithic technology, between Africa and the Midd…

Optical Dating of Holocene Dune Sands in the Ferris Dune Field, Wyoming
Optical dating of late Quaternary quartz dune sands from the Clear Creek portion of Ferris dune field, Wyoming, demonstrates the considerable potential of the technique as a chronostratigraphic tool. A sequence of radiocarbon-dated Holocene interdune strata permit optical dating of the intercalated dune sand to be tested; the concordance is good. The optical dates for the aeolian deposits not datable by radiocarbon suggest that aeolian sedimentat…

Discriminant Function Analysis of Late Quaternary Tephras from Five Volcanoes in New Zealand Using Glass Shard Major Element Chemistry
The microprobe-determined glass shard major element chemistry of tephras derived from five North Island, New Zealand volcanoes (Mayor Island, Okataina, Taupo, Tongariro, and Mount Egmont) and younger than ca. 20,000 yr B.P. was subjected to discriminant function analysis. Four separate approaches were adopted to test the match of the tephras with their known sources: (1) an analysis of raw microprobe data; (2) an analysis of normalized data; (3) …
