Further education and sixth form colleges are key institutions for facilitating skill acquisition among 16–19 year olds in the UK. They enrol half a school cohort after completion of their lower secondary education, and this includes a disproportionate number from low‐income backgrounds. This article studies the effect of free pre‐school education on child outcomes in primary school. We exploit the staggered implementation of free part‐time pre‐school for three year olds across Local Education Authorities in England in the early 2000s. The primary purpose of this study was to examine the relations of maternal childrearing practices over an 8-year period to adolescents' sympathy, personal distress, and cognitive perspective-taking. In addition, the relations of maternal empathy-related characteristics to children's empathy-related characteristics and to their own childrearing practices were assessed.
