Introduction This chapter provides an overview of the form, content, and method of state administration of legal instruments from the Ptolemaic to the Byzantine period and beyond. The administration of Egypt after the Roman conquest in 30 BCE developed in two opposing directions: the continuity of administrative institutions of the former Ptolemaic kingdom on the one hand, and the introduction of new elements by the Romans on the other.

The office of strategos was introduced into the administrative system of Egypt by Alexander the Great and further institutionalized by the succeeding Ptolemaic kings.
