A terrestrial record of climate variation during MIS 11 through multiproxy palaeotemperature reconstructions from Hoxne, UK
A terrestrial (lacustrine and fluvial) palaeoclimate record from Hoxne (Suffolk, UK) shows two temperate phases separated by a cold episode, correlated with MIS 11 subdivisions corresponding to isotopic events 11.3 (Hoxnian interglacial period), 11.24 (Stratum C cold interval), and 11.23 (warm interval with evidence of human presence). A robust, reproducible multiproxy consensus approach validates and combines quantitative palaeotemperature recon…
The role of monitoring, documentary and archival records for coastal shallow lake management
The effective management and restoration of aquatic ecosystems rely on the establishment of “reference conditions,” defined as the conditions expected in the absence of anthropogenic impacts, and require a thorough understanding of the natural variability within a system. However, at least in Europe, most systematic surveys post‐date the onset of human‐induced pressures on aquatic ecosystems, and thus fail to capture earlier degradation to water …
The Late Pleistocene-Holocene African Humid Period as Evident in Lakes
A sediment-based reconstruction of Caribbean effective precipitation during the ‘Little Ice Age’ from Freshwater Pond, Barbuda
Contemporary climate dynamics of the circum-Caribbean region are characterised by significant precipitation variability on interannual and interdecadal timescales controlled primarily by El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). However, our understanding of pre-industrial climate variability in the region is hampered by the sparse geographic distribution of palaeoclimate archives. Here, we present a hig…
Human impact on the hydroenvironment of Lake Parishan, SW Iran, through the late-Holocene
A multiproxy record from Lake Parishan, SW Iran, shows human impact on the lake and its catchment over the last 4000 years. The Parishan record provides evidence of changes in lake hydrology, from ostracod, diatom and isotope analyses, that are directly linked to human activity in the catchment; recorded by pollen and charcoal and supported by regional archaeological and historical data. The lake ostracod fauna is particularly sensitive to human-…
Multiproxy evidence for abrupt climate change impacts on terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems in the Ol'khon region of Lake Baikal, central Asia
Holocene monsoon climate documented by oxygen and carbon isotopes from lake sediments and peat bogs in China
Moisture changes over the last millennium in arid central Asia
Climate and atmospheric circulation changes over the past 1000 years reconstructed from oxygen isotopes in lake-sediment carbonate from Ireland
A 1000 year long subdecadal-resolution record of carbonate oxygen isotopes (δ 18 O c ) from Lough-na-Shade, Ireland, provides evidence for changing atmospheric circulation over northwest Europe. The total range of δ 18 O c values (>5‰) is too large to be explained by changes in water temperature. Moreover, good correlation between the lake record and a previously published δ 18 O time series from an Irish speleothem indicates that the changes in …
An 850-year ostracod-shell trace-element record from Sugan Lake, northern Tibetan Plateau, China
Palaeolimnological evidence for environmental change over the past millennium from Lake Qinghai sediments
Climate change over the past 2000 years in Western China
Desert plant pollen production and a 160-year record of vegetation and climate change on the Alashan Plateau, NW China
Drought and dust deposition in the West African Sahel
A high-resolution, multiproxy palaeolimnological record from the Manga Grasslands, northeastern Nigeria, spanning the last 5500 calendar years, reveals the episodic deterioration in Sahelian climate as significant biogeophysical thresholds were crossed. Desert-dust deposition began to increase 4700 cal. BP. Rainfall during the summer-monsoon season declined permanently after 4100 cal. BP. A further significant change in atmospheric circulation, g…
Carbon and oxygen isotope variations among lacustrine ostracods
Large ranges of 13 C/ 12 C and 18 O/ 16 O ratios are found among modem ostracods from lakes in Jamaica and Mexico. If their calcite carapaces grew in isotopic equilibrium with the lake water, then the main period of carapace formation was probably in the cooler and/or wetter months. Differences in δ 13 C and δ 18 O values between ostracods from different sites relate to spatial variations in the composition of the lake water, and differences betw…
