  • Julian and Christianity

    Open Access•David Neal Greenwood•BOOK•Julian and Christianity•2021

The Roman emperor Julian is a figure of ongoing interest and the subject of this book. This unique examination of Julian as the last pagan emperor and anti-Christian polemicist revolves around his drive and status as a ruler. The book outlines the dramatic impact of Julian's short-lived regime on the course of history, with a particular emphasis on his relationship with Christianity. Julian has experienced a wide-ranging reception throughout hist…

  • Homer and the Wrath of Julian

    Open Access•David Neal Greenwood•ARTICLE•The Classical Quarterly•2019•Referencias: 7

‘Everyone who now reads and writes in the West, of whatever racial background, sex or ideological camp, is still a son or daughter of Homer.’ While the extent to which this claim is accurate has been disputed, it is not wrong in our own day to grant the highest honours for ongoing influence to the author of the Iliad . All the more so in Late Antiquity, a period frequently viewed as hermetically isolated from the classical world, but which resolu…

  • Plato's Pilot in the Political Strategy of Julian and Libanius

    Open Access•David Neal Greenwood•ARTICLE•The Classical Quarterly•2017•Referencias: 15

The rhetorical career of Libanius of Antioch ( a.d. 314– c .393) spanned the reigns of a number of fourth-century emperors. Like many orators, he used the trope of the emperor as a pilot, steering the ship of state. He did this for his imperial exemplar Julian and in fact for his predecessor Constantius II as well. Julian sought to craft an identity for himself as a theocratic king. He and his supporters cast him as an earthly parallel to the Chr…

  • Constantinian Influence upon Julian's Pagan Church

    Open Access•David Neal Greenwood•ARTICLE•The Journal of Ecclesiastical…•2017•Referencias: 11

Constantine's endorsement of and support for the Church left their marks in certain areas. His nephew Julian reacted against state-supported Christianity and promoted his own unique version of state-supported paganism. Previous scholarship had identified this as a ‘pagan Church’ co-opting features from Christianity, but this view has recently been challenged. This article argues that the traditional understanding of a ‘pagan Church’ is correct, a…

  • Five Latin Inscriptions From Julian's Pagan Restoration

Open Access•David Neal Greenwood•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the Institute of…•2014•Citada por: 1

Scholars have often assumed that Julian's efforts to restore paganism were met with indifference at best. However, a study of Latin inscriptions praising the emperor and his religious actions can shed light on support for his revival of paganism. Although supplemented by other examples, five inscriptions from Casae, Thibilis, Panaeas, Mursa, and Cherchel are examined in detail and placed into proper context. This article argues that epigraphic ev…
