Catholic missionary associations and the saving of African child slaves in nineteenth-century Germany
In the second half of the nineteenth century, German-speaking Europe saw the foundation of some Catholic associations, which campaigned against slavery and the slave trade in parts of North and East Africa and promoted the “saving” of slaves and particularly child slaves by, for instance, ransoming boys and girls, baptizing them, and placing them at Catholic institutions and missionary stations.
