Bertrand Russell (1872–1970), man of dissent
Russell argued against the Great War, but he also wanted to drop atomic bombs on the Soviet Union after World War II, and later he advocated nuclear disarmament. How could a great logician accommodate such inconsistencies? How, as a private citizen, did he make such a world-wide impact in his late years
On Jevons's Handling of Differential Equations in the Context of His Principle of Exchange, and the Early Reactions
An important part of Jevons's economic theory was his theory of exchange of commodities. For justification he drew upon several aspects of differential equations and their applications, especially a principle in mechanics associated with equilibrium. Unfortunately his use of the principle was faulty. The error is analyzed here, along with his handling of differential equations in general, and the reactions to these aspects of his economic theory …

The interest of G. H. Hardy, F.R.S., in the philosophy and the history of mathematics
Hardy's research career shows an orthodox concern with certain areas of mathematics, where he contributed with great distinction. But throughout his career there is also evidence of regular interest in the philosophy and the history of mathematics. The influence of Bertrand Russell is quite marked
The contributions of J.J. Sylvester, F.R.S., to mechanics and mathematical physics
A survey is made of the papers written by J.J. Sylvester (1814–1897) on mechanics and mathematical physics. Some relate to aspects of his professional career. They form only a small part of the output of this largely pure mathematician, but are of variety and intrinsic merit. Their limited total exemplifies the limited measure of interest that physical applications sustained among some mathematicians during a period when the preference for pure m…

George Boole
George Boole (1815-1864) is well known to mathematicians for his research and textbooks on the calculus, but his name has spread world-wide for his innovations in symbolic logic and the development and applications made since his day. The utility of "Boolean algebra" in computing has greatly increased curiosity in the nature and extent of his achievements. His work is most accessible in his two books on logic, "A mathematical analysis of logic" (…
Philosophy of Mathematics
The questions concerning the nature and philosophy of mathematics and which are familiar to all acquainted with the history of speculative opinion, form, it is probable, but a small part of those which have at different times occurred to earnest students without perhaps ever passing out of the silent region of thought into the outward world of controversy. The common notion of mathematics that it consists of a few clear sharp axioms, capable of b…

The Sylvester Medal
The Sylvester Medal is an award made by the Royal Society ‘for the encouragement of mathematical research irrespective of nationality, and not confined to pure mathematical research’. It was instituted in memory of the Jewish mathematician James Joseph Sylvester (1814-1897), soon after his death. The Jewish community took the initiative, forming a committee chaired by Lord Rothschild and including the mathematicians A.R. Forsyth, A.G. Greenhill a…
The ingénieur savant, 1800-1830 A Neglected Figure in the History of French Mathematics and Science
The ArgumentThis paper deals with the achievements of those French mathematicians active in the period 1800-1830 who oriented their work specifically around the needs of engineering and technology. In addition to a review of their achievements, the principal organizations and institutions are noted, as is their importance as sources of employment and influence. The argument is centered on the word 'neglected" in the title. A case is made that a ma…

The correspondence between george boole and stanley jevons, 1863–1864
Although the existence of correspondence between George Boole (1815–1864) and William Stanley Jevons (1835–1882) has been known for a long time and part was even published in 1913, it has never been fully noted; in particular, it is not in the recent edition of Jevons's letters and papers. The texts are transcribed here, with indication of their significance. Jevons proposed certain quite radical changes to Boole's system, which Boole did not acc…

The entry of Fresnel
If the word did not refer to someone who owns a shop where one buys spectacles, I would be tempted to call Fresnel an ‘optician’. Yet this would also be unfair, for he also contributed to electrodynamics (§14.2.4). Born in 1788 at Broglie in Normandy to an architect and builder, Augustin Jean Fresnel was brought up in Caen, where he studied at the local school. Entering the Ecole Polytechnique in 1804 with Binet, a year after Arago and a year bef…

The Royal Society’s financial support of the publication of Whitehead and Russell’s Principia Mathematica
Perhaps the most important single publication with which the Royal Society is associated is Newton’s Principia Mathematica which was published jussu Societatis Regiae’ under the authority of ‘S. Pepys, Reg. Soc. Praeses. Julii 5. 1686’ (1). The financial support was provided on that occasion by one of the Fellows, Edmond Halley. But the Society itself was involved in supporting the financial costs of another Principia Mathematica: that written by…

The 18th-century heritage
After an attempt in the last two chapters to survey the vast amount of work done in and around the calculus, I come now to the even vaster and more complicated developments in mechanics. This subject was very much at the heart of 18th-century mathematics, and the quantity of the research is as awe-inspiring as its mathematical and historical complications. For example, the quantity and range of Euler’s work alone is bewildering; not only the cent…
Aspects of engineering mathematics, 1800–1816
As was made clear in Chapter 2 and elsewhere, the new system of engineering schools was introduced principally to supply engineers for public works and military needs. This chapter and Chapter 16 are the principal places in this book for discussions of French engineering, but its concerns permeate several other sections. We shall see in §19.3.1, as a major feature of French physical science, that about half the savants with whom we are concerned …
The entry of physicist Ampère
From Fresnel we move to his landlord Ampère, known already in our pages as a mathematician but now to take his major place for his contributions to the founding of electromagnetism and electrodynamics, in a frenzy of activity carried out between 1820 and 1827. As with Fresnel’s Chapter 13 and Fourier in Chapter 9, one figure dominates, and so a fairly close chronology can be followed.

Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) after twenty years
1990 marks the vicesenary of the death of Bertrand Russell, in his 98th year; and this arithmetical property is sufficient reason to review the historical research that has been published on his life and work during the past 20 years. During his long life he had already become the subject of historical research in many of his activities; but this interest accelerated considerably around the time of his death because in the mid 1960s he had decide…
