Saltmarsh archives of vegetation and land use change from Big River Marsh, SW Newfoundland, Canada
Pollen and plant macrofossils are often well-preserved in coastal sediments, providing a palaeoenvironmental record of sea-level and landscape change. In this study, we examine the pollen and plant macrofossil assemblages of a well-dated saltmarsh sediment core from southwest Newfoundland, Canada, to establish recent coastal vegetation and land use change, to increase the knowledge of anthropogenic activities in the area and develop pollen chrono…
A delayed climatic response to solar forcing at 2800 cal. BP
Multiproxy palaeohydrological records from three raised bogs in Northern Ireland indicate that a major shift to wetter/cooler climatic conditions postdated the rapid decrease in solar activity at 2800 cal. BP by ~100 years. This event is bracketed by two wiggle-match radiocarbon-dated cryptotephra layers in each profile, enabling a high degree of chronological precision. These replicated data corroborate previous findings based on Irish peat humi…
The use of testate amoebae in studies of sea-level change
Micropalaeontological techniques play an important role in high-resolution studies of sea-level change. Salt-marsh foraminifera are among the most valuable groups of sea-level indicators as their distribution shows a narrow vertical zonation which can be accurately related to former sea level. This paper focuses on testate amoebae (‘thecamoebians’), a closely related group of protozoans which have also been widely reported in salt marshes, but on…
