  • Plumbing

Open Access•A Trevor Hodge•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2012

Plumbing proper, that is, the network of internal pipes distributing water inside a building for domestic use, as opposed to a city's aqueducts, was extremely rare both in the eastern civilizations and in ancient Greece.

  • Reflections on the shield at Marathon

    Open Access•A Trevor Hodge•ARTICLE•The Annual of the British School…•2001•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 5

Nobody flashed a shield at the Battle of Marathon, for it is scientifically impossible: hoplite shields were curved, and you cannot reflect a flash from a curved surface. The shield can only have been waved (as Herodotus says), making it a short range signal, not from far-off traitors in Athens but traitors at Marathon, signalling the movements of their own army to the enemy. The Persians' voyage round Sounion was long and tedious, and the quicke…

  • In Vitruvium Pompeianum

    A Trevor Hodges, A Trevor Hodge•ARTICLE•American Journal of Archaeology•1996•Referencias: 1

This study centers on the castellum divisorium at Pompeii. The pipes delivering water to the city are far too large to have been filled by the small aqueduct, while within the castellum the arrangements for dividing up the water, restored on the basis of Vitruvius's prescription, are shown mathematically to be quite impractical. It is thus proposed that the sluice gates were removed in turn, leaving all the water to fill one pipe, with the other …

  • How Did Frontinus Measure the Quinaria

    A Trevor Hodges, A Trevor Hodge•ARTICLE•American Journal of Archaeology•1984•Citada por: 2

Estimates of the discharge of the aqueducts of the city of Rome are based on the quinaria totals given by Frontinus. We now know what a quinaria was, but as we did not know how Frontinus could have measured it, his figures remained suspect. Some of this doubt is now dispelled by the suggestion that it could be done by partly lowering a sluicegate until the water building up behind it levelled off at a predetermined height, and then measuring the …

  • Bevelled Joints and the Direction of Laying In Greek Architecture

    A Trevor Hodges, A Trevor Hodge•ARTICLE•American Journal of Archaeology•1975•Citada por: 3

In Greek architecture, a bevelled joint is formed when one of the two blocks at the joint has its corner cut off at an angle, forming a bevel. This is usually seen as a device to prevent the blocks getting chipped at their corners during the laying process. This may be questioned following my observation of bevels on over twenty buildings, sometimes in rough work in the foundations that would be out of sight. Moreover, it is important to observe …

  • A Roof at Delphi

Open Access•A Trevor Hodge•ARTICLE•The Annual of the British School…•1954

Because of its dating on the borderline of archaic and classical, and its excellent state of preservation, the Treasury of the Athenians at Delphi has for long been a monument of great interest to scholars working in many fields of ancient art and architecture. It is my belief that it offers valuable and surprising evidence in the perplexing problem of how the ancients roofed their buildings; and to set forth the grounds for that belief is the ai…
