  • From Curaçao to Coro

    Open Access•Ramona Negrón•ARTICLE•Slavery and Abolition•2026

This article reassesses the transimperial flight of enslaved Afro-Curaçaoans from the Dutch island of Curaçao to the Spanish mainland of Tierra Firme, particularly Coro, during the eighteenth century. Owing to Spain's policy of royal asylum, enslaved Afro-Curaçaoans could obtain freedom upon entering Spanish territory. Drawing on a detailed 1775 runaway register and colonial correspondence, the article reconstructs who fled, how they escaped, and…

This article investigates the reason why groups of merchants operating from the Dutch Republic, particularly from Amsterdam, decided to take part in the exploitation of the Spanish Empire, through a very particular type of activity, that of the slave trade. We argue that Amsterdam-based merchants were heavily engaged, through various organizational forms, in supplying Spanish American markets with enslaved Africans. This participation was rewarde…

  • The Ambiguity of Freedom

    Open Access•Ramona Negrón•ARTICLE•Slavery and Abolition•2022•Citada por: 3

The quantitative studies of manumission have revealed shifts in patterns of manumission and changes in the types of kinship that were connected to the manumission process. In these studies, the actual people and their motivations remain hidden from view. In this article, kinship ties in the manumission process in eighteenth-century Suriname are researched through a single case study: the manumissions by the prominent Surinamese slaveholders Nicol…
