  • Decolonizing the English Literary Curriculum

Open Access•Paul Giles, Joe Cleary et al.•BOOK•Decolonizing the English Literary…•2023

George Floyd's death on May 25th 2020 marked a watershed in reactions to anti-Black racism in the United States and elsewhere. Intense demonstrations around the world followed. Within literary studies, the demonstrations accelerated the scrutiny of the literary curriculum, the need to diversify the curriculum, and the need to incorporate more Black writers. Decolonizing the English Literary Curriculum is a major collection that aims to address th…

  • The Decolonial Imaginary of Borderlands Shakespeare

    Open Access•Katherine Gillen•CHAPTER•Decolonizing the English Literary…•2023

Created by Chicanx and Indigenous artists living and working in the US–Mexico Borderlands, Borderlands Shakespeare appropriations situate Shakespeare within the unique context of la frontera, engaging with its hybrid cultures, genres, and languages. These appropriations draw from Anglo, Spanish, and Indigenous traditions, and they confront Shakespeare’s colonial legacies, interrogating the complex layers of colonialism shaping the region and Shak…

  • Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy at Hispanic Serving Institutions

Elena Foulis, Katherine Gillen•ARTICLE•Journal of Latinos and Education•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 5

  • The Power of Borderlands Shakespeare

    Katherine Gillen, Adrianna M Santos•CHAPTER•Shakespeare and Latinidad•2021

This chapter examines the Pharr Community Theatre’s 2018 performance of Seres Jaime Magaña’s The Tragic Corrido of Romeo and Lupe , an appropriation of Romeo and Juliet . Like many appropriations, this bilingual play uses Shakespeare’s story to explore broad questions of language, love, identity, and justice. However, Magaña’s production grounds these explorations in the explicitly local context of the Rio Grande Valley, with environmental destru…

  • Shakespeare in the Capitalocene

    Katherine Gillen•ARTICLE•Exemplaria•2018•Referencias: 8

Titus Andronicus (1588) and Timon of Athens (1607) theorize what Jason W. Moore calls the Capitalocene, a world in which capitalism has reshaped the earth’s materiality while also radically reconfiguring conceptions of both human and nonhuman nature. With Titus emphasizing iron weapons and Timon interrogating the force of weaponized gold, both works draw on Ovidian Iron Age mythology to show how humans have violently impacted social and natural e…
