Confounding Variables Within “Referral Controls” for Children With Histories of Sexual Stimulation by Adults
Verbal and performance scores from a standardized intelligence battery for age-matched children from four groups ( n = 67) were compared to discern if the depressed scores for verbal intelligence displayed by children with histories of verified sexual stimulation by adults were epiphenomenal. The children had been referred to a psychiatric facility because of early sexual stimulation by adults, from a children's mental health service because of f…
Voluminous Sucrose Consumption in Female Rats
In a two-bottle paradigm in which water and 10% sucrose water were always available, female rats drank about 200 cc of the sugar water (about 65 g of sucrose/kg) per day for 4 wk. There were no significant decreases in consumption over this time. In Exp. 2 female rats singly housed were given two bottles containing water for 1 wk. and then a bottle containing water and a bottle containing 15% sucrose for the next week for 6 wk. When sucrose was a…
Working Memory and Reference Memory in Adult Rats following Limbic Seizures Induced at 21 or 90 Days of Age
Rats were either seized or not seized at 21 days of age (weaning) or at 90 days of age with a single systemic injection of lithium (3 mEq/kg) and pilocarpine (30 mg/kg). When tested as adults (120 days of age) for spatial memory in the Olton radial maze, the rats that had been seized as adults exhibited about five times more working (short-term) memory errors than the other three groups which did not differ significantly from one another. The num…
Effects of Permanent Residence with Foster Mothers and New Siblings upon Numbers of Mast Cells within the Thalamus of Preweaned Rats
In a split-litter, cross-fostered design, the numbers of mast cells per 10 micrometer sections within the thalamic boundaries in rats that had been reared by 8 natural or 8 foster mothers were counted 5 days and 10 days after the transfer had occurred on postnatal Day 10. The rats from 4 litters with the highest numbers of thalamic mast cells exhibited marked reductions in these numbers when fostered by mothers of the 4 litters with the fewest nu…
Complex Partial Epileptic-Like Experiences in University Students and Practitioners of Dharmakaya in Thailand
We tested the hypothesis that individuals who frequently practice meditation within another culture whose assumptions explicitly endorse this practice should exhibit more frequent and varied experience associated with complex partial epilepsy (without the seizures) as inferred by the Personal Philosophy Inventory and Roberts' Questionnaire for the Epileptic Spectrum Disorder. 80 practitioners of Dharma Meditation and 24 university students in Tha…
Geophysical Variables and Behavior
The proportions of 3,667 reports classified as unusual or odd events within eight major categories for four contiguous blocks of time between 1770 and 1970 were compared for disconcordance. The major source of the disconcordance (phi = .52) of reports between the major categories and time was due to the decrease in the numbers of reports of falls of ice, rocks, and animals but increased numbers of reports of odd luminosities, labelled as unidenti…
Normalization of Spatial Learning Despite Brain Damage in Rats Receiving Ketamine After Seizure-Induction
The concept of the neuromatrix assumes that all behaviours are associated with complex spatiotemporal electromagnetic fields within the brain. The same complex magnetic field can be supported potentially by different mosaics of neuronal associations and result in the same behaviours. In the present study the accuracy of long-term and short-term spatial memory for rats that had been treated with 100 mg/kg of ketamine immediately after the inductio…
Weight Gain in Postseized Rats is Facilitated by Adding Aspirin, Glucose, or Glucose-Taurine-Acetaminophen to Food Mush
Adult male rats were seized with lithium and pilocarpine and administered acepromazine to facilitate survival. After four days (1) 8 mg of acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), (2) 100 mg taurine-15 mg acetaminophen (Tylenol)-40 mg glucose, (3) 40 mg glucose, or (4) water was added to the food mush daily for 30 days. A fifth group served as nonseized controls. Within one week all pharmacological treatments promoted more weight recovery than food mush o…
Prefrontal Deficits” Discriminate Young Offenders from Age-Matched Cohorts
A total of 36 male adolescent delinquents and 19 age-matched students from a male secondary school were administered several different performance-based tests. Although estimates of intelligence did not differ significantly between the groups, the incarcerated delinquents displayed more impulsivity, lower conceptual level, less conceptual flexibility, and poorer critical thinking than the reference group. The linear combination of only three vari…
Personality Not Intelligence or Educational Achievement Differentiate University Students Who Access Special Needs for “Learning Disabilities”
University students who had been referred over a three year period from a special needs office because of putative learning disabilities were compared to randomly selected cohorts. There was no evidence of learning disabilities. Standardized scores for intelligence memory and educational achievement were all within the average range for both groups. Although there was no evidence of significant psychopathology in either group, the special needs g…
Subjective Pseudocyesis in Normal Women Who Exhibit Enhanced Imaginings and Elevated Indicators of Electrical Lability Within the Temporal Lobes
About one-fifth of 371 university women (mean age 26 years) reported that they had experienced symptoms of subjective pseudocyesis (false pregnancy). These women displayed markedly elevated indicators of complex partial seizure-like signs (particularly olfactory experiences, automatic behaviors and depersonalization), dissociative experiences, memory disruptions, hypomania, and right hemispheric arousal compared to women who did not report subjec…
Prednisolone Blocks Extreme Intermale Social Aggression in Seizure-Induced, Brain-Damaged Rats
In two separate blocks of experiments, the extreme within-group aggression which is typically associated with limbic seizure-induced brain injury in male rats was attenuated or abolished within two days by the administration of prednisolone in the water supply. The effect was specific to the aggression and was not simulated by dexamethasone. The results support the hypothesis that interference with inhibitory inputs to the central nucleus of the …
Early Genital Stimulation of Rats Lowers Limbic Seizure Latencies for Females but Increases Latencies for Males
The genitals of male and female rats were tactilely stimulated (glass rod) for 10 successive days beginning on postnatal Days 5, 15, 35; handled but nonstimulated litter mates served as the reference groups. Limbic seizures were induced by a single systemic injection of lithium and pilocarpine when the rats were adults. The genitally stimulated female rats displayed a lower seizure threshold (as inferred from shorter seizure-onset times) relative…
Sense of a Presence and Suicidal Ideation following Traumatic Brain Injury
50 patients who had sustained a traumatic brain injury were given complete neuropsychological assessments between 0.5 and 4.0 years after the incident; 62% of these patients reported that episodes of a "sensed presence" (left side: 71%; right side: 19%; both: 10%) had occurred. Sensed presences along the left side were primarily (82%) associated with anxiety or fear while those which occurred along the right side were more pleasant (83%). The neu…
Maintained Hypersexuality between Male Rats following Chronically Induced Limbic Seizures
Adult male albino rats were given a treatment that produced hypothermia after the induction of limbic seizures by a single subcutaneous injection of lithium and pilocarpine. When housed in groups, these rats exhibited marked hypersexuality (for at least two months), defined as repeated mounting of another male, pelvic thrusting, and persistent genital licking; while the male was mounted, female postures were assumed. There were also periods of ph…
Extreme Hypothermia Induced by a Synergism of Acute Limbic Seizures, Physical Restraint, and Acepromazine
Core temperature was measured in rats 24 hr. after they had been assigned to one of 8 groups in a 3-way analysis of variance design that involved (1) induction of limbic seizures by a systemic injection of lithium/pilocarpine, (2) physical restraint, and (3) administration of acepromazine. An extraordinarily powerful interaction was noted among seizures, physical restraint, and acepromazine-produced hypothermia (24 degrees C) compared to the othe…
Personality Changes following Brain Injury as a Grief Response to the Loss of Sense of Self
Both theoretical and empirical observations suggest that significant alterations in self-concept should occur following most closed head injuries because of diffuse synaptic modification within the temporofrontal regions; this loss of the sense of self should evoke a grief-like response sequence and should encourage paranormal/religious experiences during the subsequent months to years. The marked consistency between phenomenological experiences …
Infantile Stimulation Produces Mild Enhancement in a Primary Humoral Response of Adult Albino Rats
Rat pups from 12 litters were handled daily, once every three days, or never touched between postnatal Days 5 and 20. At 100 days of age, 20 days after inoculation with human serum albumin, trunk blood was obtained to measure the antigen binding capacity (ABC). Rats handled as infants displayed relative immunofacilitation compared to those that had not been handled; the effect explained 7% of the variance in ABC values. In comparison, sex differe…
Cholinergic Rebound after Chlorpromazine Exacerbates Lithium Muscarinic-Induced Limbic Seizures in Rats
When lithium serum levels were within the (human) therapeutic range, young and old adult male and female rats (housed singly or in groups) all displayed faster limbic seizure onset times in response to a muscarinic cholinergic agonist (pilocarpine 20 mg/kg) if a single systemic dosage of chlorpromazine was injected 24 hours previously. The effect was comparable to injecting an additional 10 mg/kg of pilocarpine. These results strongly suggest tha…
Electroencephalographic validation of a temporal lobe signs inventory in a normal population
Temporal Lobe Epileptic Signs and Correlative Behaviors Displayed by Normal Populations
With regard to epileptic signs and correlative behaviors, one hypothesis is that the experiences and nonconvulsive behaviors of patients with electrical foci within the temporal lobe are also displayed, but with less intensity, by normal people. If this is correct, then there should be quantitative relationships between the numbers of major complex partial epileptic signs (CPES) and the occurrence of other frequent clinical experiences and behavi…
Temporal Lobe Signs
Converging evidence suggests there should be a relationship between reports of subjective psi experiences, suggestibility, the capacity for imagining, and temporal lobe signs. An entire class ( n = 27) of university students was given the Personal Philosophy Inventory (which contains an indicator of temporal lobe signs) and the Wilson-Barber Inventory of Childhood Memories and Imaginings. The subjects were also evaluated individually on the hypno…
Pensioners Who Die Soon after Retirement Can Be Discriminated from Survivors by Post-Retirement Activities
Questionnaires were read to the wives of 26 living pensioners and to the widows of 20 age-matched contemporaries who had died within 5 years of retirement. The two groups of men were healthy at retirement and had worked for comparable durations in similar areas of a local mining industry. Only post-retirement measures discriminated the groups. Pensioners who died after retirement demonstrated more decreased interaction with friends, hobby time, a…

Prenatal Exposure to an ELF Rotating Magnetic Field, Ambulatory Behavior, and Lunar Distance at Birth
A significant correlation of 877 between lunar distance at the time of birth and the number of squares traversed in a open-field situation 21 to 25 days later was found for 19 litters that had been exposed continuously during their prenatal development to a 0.5 Hz, 3 to 30 gauss Rotating Magnetic Field (RMF), over a year. RMF-exposed litters that were born on or near lunar perigees traversed fewer squares in an open field than those born on or ne…
Physiological Changes Associated with Changing Fixed Ratio Schedules in Rats
In two experiments rats, which had been gradually adjusted to a fixed ratio 50 (FR 50) reinforcement schedule over 10 sessions and then suddenly were placed on a FR 125 schedule on Session 11, showed a significant decrease ( p < .05) in circulating blood eosinophil levels compared to groups which had been similarly shaped up to but maintained on a FR 50 schedule. The changes presumably occurred within a 35- to 40-min. period following the schedul…
Cajal-Retzius Cells as Electrostatic Guides for Migrating Neurons
A model is presented to explain one of the possible functions of the Cajal-Retzius cells which are known to mature perinatally but not to survive into late infantile life. In this model the processes of the Cajal-Retzius (C. R.) cells and the ventricular surface act as a transient capacitor-like mechanism during neural migration. Neurons which are connected to the ventricular surface during migration by an end foot are consequently guided by the …
Wild-Albino Hybrids and Albino Rats
Offspring of 6 wild, male (brown-coated) dump rats ( Rattus norvegicus) and laboratory albino females were compared with the offspring of albino rats on several tissue and muricide measures. At weaning, the 48 hybrid pups (all brown-coated), both vocalized and bit the experimenters' gloves; these behaviors were not apparent in the 40 albino pups. Adult hybrid rats did not kill significantly more mice than albino controls. Although hybrid rats had…
Lever Pressing in Expanding or Collapsing Intervals of Nonresponse-Contingent Reward
16 rats that had been given either one or two training days of 50, response-contingent rewards per day were placed upon one of two schedules in which the daily interval between nonresponse-contingent rewards was either increased or decreased. In the expanding time condition, the fixed interval of nonresponse-contingent reward delivery changed from 10 sec. to 14 min. over 9 consecutive days while in the collapsing-time condition, the intervals wer…
