The following essay titled ‘When Memory Comes, Where Memory Leads’ is included in the first section of the Festschrift collected in honor of Saul Friedländer upon his 90th birthday. It is an attempt to present his two autobiographic volumes, published in 1978 when he was 46 years old and in 2016 when he was 85 years old. Friedländer tells his life story in an open, candid manner, sharing with the reader a deep discrepancy between two seemingly co…
A Forty-Year-Old Campaign
On December 9, 1998, the Dutch court in Amsterdam ruled Anne Frank’s diary to be authentic, and that anyone who cast doubt on its authenticity was breaking the law and would be fined. This article examines the ongoing battle between those who view themselves as charged with the legacy of the diary and the Holocaust deniers; it also examines the methods used by the latter and their possible influence on society. The first half deals with the event…
Yehuda Bauer and the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (Ihra)
Professor Yehuda Bauer is a world-renowned scholar of the Holocaust, antisemitism, and genocide. Nevertheless, his activities and impact in public policy have become a major focus of his efforts, particularly in recent years. This article examines Bauer's impact on perhaps the most prominent of these efforts: that of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). The IHRA has become a major factor in international Holocaust remembrance …
Confronting Antisemitism in Modern Media, the Legal and Political Worlds

The volume points to the need for a globally coordinated approach on the political and legal l…
Confronting Antisemitism from the Perspectives of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism
This volume engages with antisemitic stereotypes as religious symbols that express and transmit a belief system of Jew-hatred. These religious symbols are stored in Christian, Muslim and even today’s secular cultural and religious memories. This volume explores how antisemitic religious symbol systems can play a key role in the construction of group identities.
Comprehending and Confronting Antisemitism
This volume provides a compendium of the history of and discourse about antisemitism - both as a unique cultural and religious category. Antisemitic stereotypes function as religious symbols that express and transmit a belief system of Jew-hatred, which are stored in the cultural and religious memories of the Western and Muslim worlds, migrating freely between Christian, Muslim and other religious symbolic systems.
Legislating for Equality
The publication consists of a comprehensive collection of all UN member states' legislation on non-discrimination, protection of minorities, prohibition of hate-crimes and hate speech. The publication, divided into four volumes (according to continents), provides a legal model for combating discrimination through national legislation.
The Holocaust in Lithuania
L’historien et la recherche sur l’antisémitisme
Tendances dans la recherche sur les causes de la Shoah
This essay does not deal with the reasons for the Holocaust, an issue that has been extensively researched; it rather analyzes how historians, sociologists and savants, Jews and non-Jews alike, looking for these reasons, were influenced by the historical, political and social developments in each decade. The study of Germany’s history and uniqueness coupled by anti-Semitism in the 1940s and especially in the post-war years; of totalitarian regime…
The Richard Wagner and Adolf Hitler Connection
The question at the centre of this study is whether or not Adolf Hitler’s fascination with Richard Wagner, the man and the musician, originated in Wagner’s antisemitism. Based on primary sources, this study points in another direction, indicating that Hitler considered his attitude to Wagner to be a private, even intimate, matter; and that it was the exhilaration he felt when listening to Wagner’s operas that made him feel worthy and capable of b…

Amalek's Accomplices' Blaming Zionism for the Holocaust
During the late 1970s and early 1980s the ultra-Orthodox anti-Zionist circles in Israel revived with fervour their campaign of accusations against Zionism for its alleged conduct during the Holocaust. This campaign charged the Zionist movement, both in the land of Israel and abroad, with complicity and even initiative in the destruction of European Jewry. 'Amalek's Accomplices' was the title of a series of articles that appeared in the mid1970s.2…
The Allies, Herzl's Testament, the Holocaust and Limitations of Jewish Policies, July 1944
On 10 July 1944, the fortieth anniversary of Herzl's death, David Ben-Gurion, then chairman of the Jewish Agency Executive, delivered a public speech concerning the situation of Zionism and the Jewish people at that point in time. The part of his speech, sharply accusing the Allies of total indifference to the fate of the Jews under Nazi occupation, was omitted from the collection of his essays published in 1957. This article explains the omissio…
