The reproduction of structural inequalities in online job search strategies and outcomes
Does digital stratification foster inequalities in access to work and employment? We address this question by examining inequalities related to online job search skills and the outcomes of the online search process. Results from a representative survey of 1103 Spanish jobseekers show that online job search skills positively affect the chances of getting an interview through employment platforms but that they are unevenly distributed. Online job s…
Frightening Yet Fulfilling’
Harm reduction workers minimise the adverse health, social, and legal consequences of drug use through their engagement with people who use drugs (PWUD). Felix, a nurse overseeing drug use at a harm reduction facility in Barcelona, offers a glimpse into the hidden realities of their work. His account reveals how exposure to structural inequalities and violence shapes the socially situated experience of vulnerability at work. Taking us into his so…
Violence in harm reduction
Harm reduction professionals strive to reduce the health, social, and legal consequences associated with drug use in contexts permeated by violence. Building on fieldwork in Paris and Barcelona, we examine how they make sense of this violence. In Paris, the discussion of violence primarily hinges on the narratives of suffering from people who use drugs and the obstacles posed by the political context. In Barcelona, the narrative emphasizes precar…
Drugs, Law Enforcement and Urban Marginalisation in Downtown Barcelona
At a time when scholars point to the emergence of a new policing model aimed at mitigating the devastating consequences of drug policing, police violence towards People Who Use Drugs (PWUD) persists. We examine this discrepancy by investigating officers' perceptions of PWUD and how these perceptions shape their routine policing work and the meanings they create around it. We find that officers characterise PWUD as mentally ill and socially exclud…
A New Understanding of the Role of Self-oriented Motivations in the Creation of Social Enterprises
The Janus Face of Organizational Knowing
This article challenges our current understanding of the role of knowing for organizational participation by discussing how, and under which circumstances, knowing hinders participation instead of fostering it. Drawing upon 18 months of fieldwork at a social impact accelerator, I first show that showing that the knowing emerging from collective practices and interactions generates disengagement among actors. Second, I illuminate the role of the s…
Online job search discouragement
How do people experience the platform‐mediated job search process? We explore this question based on a sample of in‐depth interviews ( n = 20) with low‐qualified, unemployed Spanish job seekers. Our main finding shows that the ways they use Information and Communication Technologies negatively impact their engagement in online job search activities. Based on our findings, we develop a framework of online job search discouragement revolving around…
Under threat
I make two points about the role of threats for ethnographic fieldwork in contexts suffused by interpersonal violence. First, the experience of implicit and explicit threats operates as a powerful cultural agent that significantly transforms fieldworkers' relationship with the field. Second, subjecting oneself to threats can become a central component of the ethnographic immersion into the field. The notion of 'threat wisdom' connects these two p…
Jobless and Burnt Out
This article examines how inequalities in digital skills shape the outcomes of online job‐seeking processes. Building on a representative survey of Spanish job seekers, we show that people with high digital skill levels have a greater probability of securing a job online, because of their ability to create a coherent profile and make their application visible. Additionally, it is less probable that they will experience burnout during this process…

From the street to the drug consumption room. Injected drug use across consumption environments
Previous studies have reported that injected drug use cannot be understood in a spatiotemporal vacuum but, paradoxically, they have tended to analyze this practice in a single environment instead of examining how people who inject drugs deploy their agency across environments. This ethnographic account describes and analyzes how David, an injected cocaine user, moved from the streets of Barcelona to a drug consumption room By accounting his trans…
Grimpeur professionnel
Creativity at work
Creative work has emerged at the core of the new economy and is primarily studied in the art and the media, music and advertising business. This article presents data from an ethnographic research with professional rock climbers. It argues that the production of work for sale by these climbers is a form of creative work. The thread of the argument is twofold. First, their work is inextricably intertwined and paced with highly creative activities.…
The labor of reputation building
Reputation has become a highly valuable commodity in multiple labor markets such as sports, the arts, academia, knowledge work and fashion modelling. While reputation has always played a key role in orienting the decision-making process, what has gained increasing importance are the efforts deployed by a growing number of people to create, develop and manage their individual reputation. Building on a two-year ethnographic study with high profile …
The Beautiful and the Damned
This article examines new media production in professional climbing through the prism of the work relationships between climbers and companies. The development of new media has driven significant transformations in the production, diffusion, and consumption of professional sports, notably in the relationships between athletes, companies, fans, and organizations. However, little is known on the influence of new media on the work of professional at…
Cet article aborde…
Multi-layered labor
This article provides a detailed analysis of the labor of professional rock climbers. It focuses on a mode of multi-layered labor contrasting with the traditional allocation of tasks among workers, i.e. the division of labor. It is argued that, while multi-layered labor emerges in markets with low economic circulation and weak organization, it also reflects how professional versatility is at the heart of the mode of production of value in these l…

Co-creation and New Media
The term co-creation refers to the emergence and rise of consumers' participation in making and circulating media content, participation that has become a salient source of economic and symbolic value. The recuperation of this content for commercial purposes has been progressively acknowledged, but less is known about how these co-creative practices shape the work of professional media producers. In this article, I investigate this issue by explo…

A Telephone Survey on Attitudes of Pet Owners and Non-Owners to Dogs and Cats in Belgian Cities
A telephone survey was carried out in three Belgian cities: Brussels, Ghent, and Liege. In order to analyze aspects of the coexistence between human beings and pets, 600 persons, including an equal number of owners and non-owners, were interviewed to determine reasons for pet ownership and problems associated with the presence of pets. Two districts from each city were included in the sample. Districts were selected based on type of residence (e.…
