  • Pedagogy and gender in long eighteenth-century England

    Michèle Cohen•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•2026

The paper interrogates and challenges the assumptions and contradictions embodied in the representations of males’ and females’ education by comparing their education and using pedagogy as lens and frame of analysis. Examining pedagogies enabled me to explore why eighteenth-century women’s “modern” education was and often still is represented as superficial and inadequate while male classical education was and still is represented as superior and…

  • Becoming Centaur

    Open Access•Michèle Cohen•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2019

Horses as ‘special, unique and extraordinary animals’ and horsemanship are the focus of Monica Mattfeld’s book. Constructed around four models of horsemanship, the book’s four chapters map shifts in the performance of masculinity as mediated by men’s relations with horses to throw new light on issues around politics, gender and identity from the late seventeenth to the late eighteenth centuries. The first model discusses the superb late seventeen…

  • Risk Perception, Risk Attitude, and Decision

    Michèle Cohen•ARTICLE•Mathematical Population Studies•2015

The classical expected utility model of decision under risk has been criticized from an experimental point of view (Allais’ paradox) as well as for its restrictive lack of explanatory power. The Rank-Dependent Expected Utility model answers some of these criticisms. The decision maker is characterized by two functions: a utility function on consequences measuring preferences over sure outcomes and a probability weighting function measuring the su…

  • The Grand Tour. Language, National Identity and Masculinity

    Michèle Cohen•ARTICLE•Changing English•2001

The Grand Tour usually refers to the travel of Englishmen to Italy, where they acquired the taste essential to the gentleman and the paintings and other objects of virtù to display in their country estates. In this paper, I consider not Englishmen abroad but the meaning of the Grand Tour as a cultural and educational practice for elite males in eighteenth-century England. My argument is that as an educational practice, the Grand Tour was highly c…

  • An Experimental Study of Interference Between Receptive and Productive Processes Relating to Simultaneous Translation

    Open Access•Frieda Goldman-Eisler, Michèle Cohen et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1974•Referencias: 1

The question of the interference between the reception and production of speech is basic to an understanding of the processes involved in simultaneous translation. This paper reports an experiment designed to throw light on this problem by controlling the level of interference between decoding and encoding speech using hesitancy as an indicator of interference. This proved effective in spotting the levels at which interference takes place. Encodi…

  • Symmetry of Clauses and the Psychological Significance of Left-Branching

    Open Access•Frieda Goldman-Eisler, Michèle Cohen et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1971

This paper deals with the questions of symmetry in sentence clauses, and of the psychological significance of left-branching. Texts based on spontaneous and prepared speech, drawn from populations ranging from political speakers to schizophrenic patients were analysed. The results showed that symmetry is not a characteristic of clauses and longer clauses consisting of five or more words to the left or right of the verb, or both, showed a signific…
