Can prisons move people into better jobs? A look at correctional vocational training programs and sectoral employment outcomes
Three‐quarters of US prisons offer vocational training programs, which aim to place trainees in middle‐skills jobs in specific occupational sectors post‐release. Measuring Changes in Bias-Motivated Attacks
Hate crimes are notoriously difficult to measure. We propose a way to measure changes in group-specific exposure to violence using data on crimes that are potentially bias-motivated. We use this approach to study whether anti-Asian violence rose in the United States during the earliest phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. The effects of immigration enforcement on traffic stops
Research Summary This research asks whether jail‐based immigration enforcement leads to the profiling of Hispanics by municipal police. I leverage a natural experiment to examine the effects of 287(g) jail partnerships on traffic stops and arrests by municipal police in North Carolina in the late 2000s. I find that stops of Hispanic drivers fell in the wake of 287(g) agreements, and show that this fall was driven by changes in Hispanic road use. …
