In this article I argue that a critical theory of whiteness is necessary, though not sufficient, to the formulation of an adequate explanatory account of the mechanisms of racial oppression in the modern world. In this paper I utilize Martin Beck Matustik's intellectual biography ofHabermas as a means for reflecting on the meaning that critical theory has for us in the wake of September 11.
