Law and Development
This book draws on the analytical framework of New Institutional Economics (NIE) to critically examine the role which law and the legal system play in economic development. Analytical concepts from NIE are used to assess policies which have been supported by multilateral development organisations including securing private property rights, reform of the legal system and financial development. The importance of culture in shaping the legal environ…

Optimal Law Enforcement with Legal Aid
The economic literature on enforcement is generally pessimistic concerning the use of legal aid. In this paper we show that legal aid can be a part of optimal law enforcement. The rationale behind our result is that with legal aid, in a system with legal or judicial error both guilty and innocent individuals are better off, because the marginal cost of defence expenditure is reduced. If, on average, legal aid helps the innocent more than the guil…

Spatial Aspects of Deregulation in the Market for Legal Services
LOVE J. H., STEPHEN F. H., GILLANDERS D. D. and PATERSON A. A. (1992) Spatial aspects of deregulation in the market for legal services, Reg. Studies 26, 137–147. Competition and the Market for Legal Services
Recent scholarship in the sociology of the professions and the legal profession in particular has placed considerable stress on the market in its account of the evolution of professions.' Paradoxically, it may be that these scholars have not taken the metaphor of the market seriously enough. Thus, the market control theorists have been driven by their preconceptions to argue that having lost control of the supply of legal services and in the abse…

Self-Management
The subject of self-management - of companies in which the decisions are made by the work force rather than by the managers or owners - has long been of interest both to economists and to a wider audience. In this 1984 book Saul Estrin offers a comprehensive survey of how workers’ self-management has influenced industrial structure and the allocation of resources in Yugoslavia, where a system of this type has operated since the 1950s. The book wi…
