Police officer involved shootings – retrospective study of situational characteristics
The study analyzed the situational characteristics of 112 incidents where police used firearms to handle high threat situations. Most shooting incidents emanated from usually uneventful tasks, e.g., handling burglaries or disturbances. The assailants were commonly armed with firearms (26%), sharp (27%) or blunt objects (10%). Use of pepper spray in policing
Pepper spray (OC) is a policing tool aimed to prevent or stop aggressive behavior by quickly and temporarily incapacitate without injuring. To date, few studies have investigated OC’s operational usefulness and limitations. OC reduced violent behavior in 93% of the 936 incidents investigated. Life-cycle Effects of Age at School Start
In Sweden, children typically start school the year they turn seven. We combine this school entry cut‐off with individuals' birthdates to estimate effects of school starting age (SSA) on educational attainment and long‐run labour market outcomes. We find that school entry age raises educational attainment and show that postponing tracking until age 16 reduces the effect of SSA on educational attainment. Estimating Preferences for Local Public Services Using Migration Data
Using Swedish micro data, the paper examines the impact of local public services on community choice. The choice of community is modelled as a choice between a discrete set of alternatives. It is found that, given taxes, high spending on child care attracts migrants. Less conclusive results are obtained with respect to the role of spending on education and elderly care. Dynamic Treatment Assignment
We discuss estimation of treatment effects when the timing of treatment is the outcome of a stochastic process. We show that the duration framework in discrete time provides a fertile ground for effect evaluations. We suggest easy-to-use nonparametric survival function matching estimators that can be used to estimate the time profile of the treatment.We study the small-sample properties of the proposed estimators and apply one of them to evaluate…
