New Monetarism in Continuous Time
We develop a New Monetarist model in continuous time where agents trade continuously in competitive markets and infrequently in pairwise meetings. Agents can produce and consume both in flows over time intervals and in discrete quantities at points in time. We detail the methodology to solve individual optimisation problems and characterise the full set of perfect foresight equilibria. We illustrate the role of continuous time and the tractabilit…
Liquidity and the Threat of Fraudulent Assets
We study an over-the-counter (OTC) market in which the usefulness of assets as a means of payment or collateral is limited by the threat of fraudulent practices. Agents can produce fraudulent assets at a positive cost, which generates upper bounds on the quantity of each asset that can be traded in the OTC market. Each of these endogenous, asset-specific, resalability constraints depends on the cost of fraud, on the frequency of trade, and on the…
Friedman Meets Hosios
This article studies optimal monetary policy in an economy with endogenous search decisions. We show that the same frictions that give fiat money a positive value generate an inefficient quantity of goods in each trade and an inefficient number of trades. The Friedman rule eliminates the first inefficiency and the Hosios rule the second. A monetary equilibrium attains the social optimum if and only if both rules are satisfied. When they cannot be…
