    This entry discusses the defining characteristics of public goods and explains why private markets are typically not suitable mechanisms for the supply of such goods. A fundamental problem is that the socially desirable supply of a public good depends on the sum of the demands of citizens, but citizens may have an incentive to misreport their preferences.
