  • Institutional Perspectives on the Productive Use of Resources

    Open Access•John Laitner•ARTICLE•Economic Policy•2020

There is increasing evidence that climate change is a growing social and economic burden. Moreover, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are at risk of falling short of their intended targets. The difficulties will only be made worse as the climate and economic burdens grow. A growing literature suggests that the problems largely stem from the non-productive use of resources which erode our social and economic well-being—especially over t…

  • Cost and Benefits of Deep Decarbonization in Russia

    Open Access•John Laitner, Oleg Lugovoy et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Policy•2020•Referencias: 1

With the new Paris climate agreement, 185 of 197 nations have committed to lower emissions of planet-warming greenhouse gases. The intent is to limit global temperature growth within 2 degrees Celsius (°C), with a hopeful target of 1.5°C. At the same time, a special report from the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) indicates that large emission reductions, in fact, must be achieved by 2030 if the temperature increase is to remain below…

  • Understanding the size of the energy efficiency resource

    Open Access•John Laitner, John A “Skip” Laitner•ARTICLE•Policy and Society•2009•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 1

There is a huge potential for cost-effective investments in energy efficiency throughout all sectors of the U.S. economy: on the order of 46 billion barrels of oil equivalent between now and 2030. This is about 2.5 times bigger than what some have suggested might be available from off-shore drilling. That magnitude of further gains in energy efficiency could generate a significant downward pressure on oil prices, and increase both the resilience …

  • Information Technology and U.S. Energy Consumption

Open Access•John Laitner, John A “Skip” Laitner•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2002

A significant debate has emerged with respect to the energy requirements of the Internet. The popular literature has echoed a misleading study that incorrectly suggests the growth of the information economy will require huge amounts of new energy resources. Even correcting the misleading assumptions in that study, discussion on this topic tends to result in a highly limited and unsatisfactory review of many larger issues. Although the evidence su…

  • Secular Changes in Wealth Inequality and Inheritance

    Open Access•John Laitner•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2001•Citada por: 3

Data suggest that the distribution of wealth among households in the USA and UK has become more equal over the last century, though, at least for the USA, the pattern may have reversed recently. This paper shows that a model in which all households save for life-cycle reasons and some for dynastic purposes as well offers a possible or partial explanation: the model predicts rising cross-sectional equality of wealth when longevity increases. There…

  • Earnings within Education Groups and Overall Productivity Growth

    John Laitner•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2000•Referencias: 1

To offer a possible interpretation for recent empirical findings on earnings growth, this paper constructs a simple model with endogenous human capital investment, a distribution of natural abilities, and unbiased technological progress. The model predicts that in the long run, average earnings within any education group will grow more slowly than average wages overall. It also predicts that average earnings in high-education groups ultimately wi…

  • Modeling Marital Connections among Family Lines

    John Laitner•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•1991•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 3

This paper examines the role of marital connections in models of intertemporal household behavior. Recent work by B. Douglas Bernheim and Kyle Bagwell (1988) implies that such connections might vastly expand the scope of neutrality results. The present work studies several formulations including not only marriage but also descriptions of how people choose spouses. Purposeful choices lead to assortative mating. All versions of the framework tend t…

  • Tax Changes and Phase Diagrams for an Overlapping Generations Model

    John Laitner•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•1990•Citada por: 2

The literature evaluating tax changes within an intertemporal general equilibrium framework subdivides into representative agent and overlapping generations formulations. Papers in the former class have developed techniques analogous to those routine for static analyses. The author shows that the same general approach works for the overlapping generations model. The context is the system from Alan Auerbach and Laurence Kotlikoff's Dynamic Fiscal …
