  • True Cost of War

Erhan Artuc, Nicolas Gomez-Parra et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2026

This paper proposes a new method to estimate the welfare impact of conflicts and remedy common data constraints in conflict-affected environments. The method first estimates how agents regard spatial welfare differentials by voting with their feet, using pre-conflict data. Then, it infers a lower-bound estimate for the conflict-driven welfare shock from partially observed post-conflict migration patterns. Results for the conflict in Eastern Ukrai…

  • Patterns of Labour Market Adjustment to Trade Shocks with Imperfect Capital Mobility

Open Access•Erhan Artuc, Irene Brambilla et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2022•Referencias: 38

We explore how different investment frictions affect the patterns of responses of labour markets to tariff cuts. To investigate these patterns, we formulate a multi-sector dynamic model featuring capital and labour adjustment costs that we fit to Argentine data. Using counterfactual simulations of a tariff decline in the textile sector, we show that capital adjustment can create long-run responses of real wages that are larger than the short-run …

  • Transit Migration

    Open Access•Erhan Artuc, Çağlar Özden•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2018•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 26

The paths of many migrants include multiple destinations and transit routes, yet this pattern is almost never reflected in empirical analyses. For example, 9% of recent immigrants to the US arrived from a transit country as opposed to the one they were born in. Among those arriving from many OECD countries, transit migration ratio exceeds 30%. To explain these patterns, we construct a dynamic model of global migration that allows transit migratio…

  • The Economics of Hosting Refugees

    Open Access•Jennifer Alix-Garcia, Erhan Artuc et al.•BOOK•2017

In 1991, thousands of South Sudanese boys walked into Kenya. Having fled war in their own countries, about 20 thousand of these "lost boys" first tried taking refuge in Ethiopia. With no real options to stay, many were killed on their walk back to South Sudan or while attempting to swim the crocodile infested River Gilo, before entering Kenya. Between 7 thousand and 10 thousand were estimated to have made it alive to Kenya at that time, with no p…

  • A Global Assessment of Human Capital Mobility

Open Access•Erhan Artuc, Frédéric Docquier et al.•BOOK•2014

Discussions of high-skilled mobility typically evoke migration patterns from poorer to wealthier countries, which ignore movements to and between developing countries. This paper presents, for the first time, a global overview of human capital mobility through bilateral migration stocks by gender and education in 1990 and 2000, and calculation of nuanced brain drain indicators. Building on newly collated data, the paper uses a novel estimation pr…
