  • Migration, child education, human capital accumulation, and a brain dilution tax

    Open Access•LEONID V AZARNERT•ARTICLE•Journal of Demographic Economics•2025

I study the effect of educational policy in the host economy on human capital accumulation and growth. The analysis is performed in a two-country growth model with endogenous fertility. I show that providing additional free educational services for immigrant children can increase the attractiveness of migration for less skilled individuals, which can outweigh the positive effect of this policy on the acquisition of human capital. In contrast, imp…

  • Privatization of the kibbutz and the demand for money

    LEONID V AZARNERT•ARTICLE•Israel Affairs•2017•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 3

This article studies a unique case of transition to capitalism that involves adjustment to money: the privatization of the Israeli kibbutz system. Kibbutz members in Israel had refrained from using money for decades. The bankruptcy of the kibbutz system compelled them to enter the national monetary economy in the 1990s, and they opened personal bank accounts. The findings show that this process increased the monetary base in Israel but not broade…

  • Abortion and Human Capital Accumulation

    Open Access•LEONID V AZARNERT•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2009•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 3

This article analyzes the relationship between abortion and female education. It provides new empirical evidence from sub‐Saharan Africa to show that more liberal abortion policies are associated with a higher female secondary school enrollment. It is assumed in the model that easier access to abortion decreases probability of dropping out of school for a female child in the case of an occasional pregnancy. As a consequence, it enhances parental …

  • Foreign Aid, Fertility and Human Capital Accumulation

    Open Access•LEONID V AZARNERT•ARTICLE•Economica•2008•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 37

This paper analyses the effect of foreign aid on population growth and human capital accumulation. Consistent with empirical evidence from sub‐Saharan Africa, the model shows that foreign aid can work against its stated goal of alleviating poverty and promoting growth. Humanitarian aid fosters population growth and adversely affects the recipients' incentive to invest in human capital. The analysis suggests that foreign aid may lock a recipient e…

  • Epitaph of Onesimos the Son of Kallisthenes

    LEONID V AZARNERT, Leonid Azarnert•ARTICLE•Ancient Civilizations from…•2006

This note analyses one of the Bosporan sepulchral inscriptions. The analysis suggests that the epitaph of Onesimos the son of Kallisthenes is a metric epigram cast in two iambic trimesters and not a prose inscription as has been previously believed
