Educational Accountability, Value-Added Modeling, and the Origin of the Achievement Gap
Empirical results are consistent with the hypothesis that socioeconomic factors contribute to initial disparities in performance that are perpetuated by demoralizing grading, testing, and grouping practices throughout the K-12 years. A High‐Value Agriculture‐Based Strategy for Reducing Poverty in Sub‐Saharan Africa
The World Bank and IMF emphasize privatization and economic liberalization as a strategy to reduce poverty in developing nations. However, results have been disappointing. A Failure of Imagination
This article analyzes recent advances in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology and draws three conclusions. First, conventional military forces are highly vulnerable to armed UAVs. A small force of UAVs could decimate entire divisions of soldiers, armor, and artillery, eliminate the ability to resupply and sustain armies in the field, destroy all aircraft in a given theater, and put Nimitz-class carriers out of action. Increasingly, program managers are required to evaluate programs with multiple outcomes against costs. This is difficult when program outcomes are not easily translated into a common metric. The Cost-Effectiveness of Five Policies for Improving Student Achievement
Comparisons of student achievement effect sizes suggest that systems in which student performance in math and reading is rapidly assessed between 2 and 5 times per week are 4 times as effective as a 10% increase in per pupil expenditure, 6 times as effective as voucher programs, 64 times as effective as charter schools, and 6 times as effective as increased accountability.
